From the mouth of a kid with Aspergers Syndrome.

As some of you know, my son has Aspergers Syndrome. It is under the umbrella of Autism. Not as debilitating, more of a social problem. He doesn't understand jokes or sarcasm. AT ALL. You really have to learn to not say things that he can't take literally.
I have been writing down some of the funny things he says and thought I would share it.

Cameron: Mom, can I have something to drink?
Me: Sure, as soon as I am done my lunch, I will make you some juice.
Me: (popped the last bite of hotdog in my mouth...still chewing)
Cameron: MOM! You LIED to me!


Cameron: I..I..I,I,I ummm I
My Mother: Cameron! Spit it out!
Cameron rolls spit around in his mouth...
Um...I normally just swallow it.


Me: Wow! Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed!!
Cameron:.....It's against the wall???!


Cameron: Where's my jacket??
Me: I don't know...do I wear it? (typical mom response there)
Cameron: Noooo (laughing) You are too fat, it wouldn't fit!!!


Cameron: Mom, my soup is cold now.
Me: Suck it up Buttercup, if you hadn't have been playing, it would be hot still.
Cameron: Suck it up? Like with a straw???

Cameron: (Falls down) OWWW...My Hand! Wahhh
I check, no damage, not even a scrape.
Me: Shake it off Tough Guy!
Cameron: Like my whole hand??! How would I play with my cars??


This is just a bit of my life with a child with Aspergers Syndrome. This is the fun part, makes me laugh. Thought I would share.

my friend is a teacher and has a student with aspergers. he really does say some hilarious stuff. latest one to date was my favorite. it was on may 4th of this year. he goes up to my friend and says: may the 4th be with you.

bet you didnt get it either the first time. i love this kid.

Well I am a Paraprofessional in New Jersey High School and I deal with a few kids with Aspergers Syndrome and like you said it seems more of a social form of Autism. These kids are more of a joy to be around than some of the regular ed students and I have some of the most interesting conversations with them. Their IQ's tend to be very high and linear and logical thinking is something to be envied sometimes. I find these kids to be a handful sometimes but the limitations they seem to have on the surface is nothing compared to the gift they have in other aspects of their lives.

Did I give myself away? LOL I live by sarcasm, gets me in trouble with him sometimes though.
"Ok, Cameron, there is NOTHING I would rather be doing then winning that track for you on MarioKart".

ARGH! How can you not play his DS for him at that point??!

He is insanely smart, I just talked to his teacher and she has moved him up to a grade 4 reading level...He's in grade 1. He is undergoing testing right now to figure out if he does have Aspergers, or is a genius with eccentric tenancies. I figure by the time he is 10, he will be smarter than me lol

Thats great Steph, a good laugh. The kid has natural comedian in him, some of those are priceless.

I know it must be tough sometimes, but moments like these make up for it.

"Drink lots of water! It'll help you stay slim, trim and transform you so you can defeat and remodel yourself into something worth while." (Said at the dinner table)

Cam was watching TV in my room...I asked him why he was watching Dr. Phil...his reply "I have to, just in case I get a mother-in-law!"

Cam was at the hospital with a migraine. After they took his blood pressure, temp and pulse, he looked at the intake nurse, put on a brave face (with tears) and asked "Well? What are the results?" (He thought he was dying or had a "disease")

Before I took him to the hospital, I asked him what hurts and he said "my head, my eyeballs and I have a bit of memory loss"

Mom, I'm almost as tall as you, now I just have to grow my head.

It's funny that he is so straight laced with his comments, not realising they are hilarious. Regardless of his aspergers, it sounds like you both handle it very well.

I know several kids with Aspergers Syndrome. I am always amazed at how incredibly SMART they are in the math/science disciplines. Maybe it is because they do take everything so literally. Great people.

Nice to read your posts about Cam, you have a great outlook.

I too have a son, Oliver, on the Autistic Spectrum, he was diagnosed 9 years ago (he's 12 1/2 now) as Autistic - Mild to Moderate.

Oh yes, can relate to the literal thing . . . .
- Don't eat too much or you'll go pop !
- When he is fidgetting - have you got ants in your pants
- after running a bath we've asked him to go get in the bath, but forgot to tell him to get undressed first !!!

Many times he has got stuck trying to defeat the "Boss Fight" at the end of a level on a video game because he can't press the keys fast enough, but he insists on pressing my fingers when I'm trying to complete the level

Sounds like Cam is doing good, play to his strengths and be a "pushy parent" to get the best for him . . . .

So far so good! He is a chatterbox and a charmer, people love him. No embarrassing incidents so far, but almost everyone he meets are shocked by the large words he uses. Just this morning he told me he had a "potential predicament" because he was just finished hard on Guitar Hero and was moving on to expert "and Mom, I am not an expert, I don't know how they even programed this game"

Well the student I worked with this year had a good one on me. He is 17. Thing is he's right in what he say's. It is just they don't know it's not socially acceptable. I laugh at things he said, because they are humorous. I also have to tell him it's not acceptable.

For example he mentioned that he likes Jeopardy,
I said: 'I like Jeopard too'.
Him: ' Wow we both like the same game show, but your much older than me, 23 years to be exact, and you have black hair that's turning gray'.
Me: Your right, but remember you don't need to discuss people's age outloud, some people don't like that.
Him: Okay, (he leans over to my ear cupping his hand to his mouth and to my ear) and whispers "your much older than me, 23 years to be exact, and you have black hair that's turning gray'.
Me: That's much better (I walked into an empty room and started laughing). lol it was hilarious! :BLAA:
