I guess Dennis Lehane would be up there, author of Mystic River, nice twisted murder mysteries.

Of course my senior thesis was on the humor of Douglas Adams

I also liked steven kings older stuff but as we can only choose 1, Douglas Adams by a long shot.

I am in the process of re-Reading that book again. I read it in 9th grade for english class. Now I am reading it again for pleasure. Stuff makes alot more sence now then it did then.

Novels: Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, John Grisham.

Peter Egan is one of those special writers that has captured many minds in America. I have subscribed to Road & Track and Cycle World for many years (decades?) and have loved his work. Sometimes he is just down right hilarious and funny (Car Repair for Near Idiots) I almost fell off the toilet (favorite reading spot)!!

My choice has to be steinbeck; I love the way he imbued so many of his humble characters with such dignity -Of mice and men, Sweet Thursday, Cannery and the grapes of wrath. And the moon is down for peoples reaction to oppression.

Terry Goodkind.

Stephen King comes in a close second. I grew up about 12 miles from his house in Bangor, ME. We used to see him in Bangor all the time but that was way back when he was just becoming known as an author. He used to teach at UMO.

Yeah my kids love the (Dutch) gruffalo, that's why I have this avatar :thumbup:
They also have the gruffalo's child (in Dutch) and almost all the other books from Alex Scheffler and Julia Donaldson (in English), great kids books.

All 3 write really similar books that I enjoy greatly.

I read about a book a week during my commute and go through them so fast I end up re-reading them. I keep the ones I like and sell the ones I don't and I still don't have enough shelf space. I love many of the authors already mentioned.

Currently I am re-reading Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series. I orginally picked it up because it was a big book 750+ pages and I am glad I did. Even though it is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe you don't need to know the background, I don't. It mentions background stuff but it isn't necessary to understand for the main story line. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SERIES IF YOU LIKE FANTASY, SCFI-FI, OR WAR. I think there are 12 books out now and you can buy some of them put together as omnibus-es. By the time I finished the first omnibus (3 books and a short story) I was hooked by the story line but the characters is what makes it standout. After so many books the author really, REALLY fleshes out the characters for you.

I won't spoil it for anyone but at one point I was so disgusted with the author I threw the book. In my opinion that makes a good author.
