far out! 40000km service makes me nervous!

Well it's due...that time in a bike's life when they open up the engine to check the valve clearances!!!

This means someone else gets to play with my bike!!!

Now i know i should'nt fret, but....my bike runs perfectly, is quiet, in fact, i have never had a bike that has been so problem free...i just keep putting in Motul 7100 full synthetic oil every 3500-4000km's, and change the oil filter every second oil change, and the motor just seems to run better and better...

I also make sure the rest of the bike is running in top notch running order at all times...check head bearings, swingarm bearing's, etc, regularly, keep things well lubed, adjusted, etc...

Some people say that if your confident everything is alright, then why bother with opening the motor to check something that is probably ok anyway!!!

Thought about this!!! Then the Anally retentive sucker within me, said that i was being silly, and to book the bike in to have it's bits looked at!

I suppose it's a good thing, cause at least with decent machanic going over my bike, they may find something i am not aware of, whilst performing the major service...

I will say this though...they will be hard pressed to find something, and if they do, i will be immediately suspicious of their intentions....like trying to get me to fix something that may well not be broke...if you know what i mean!

Anyway...i am nervous! Should i be???

Sounds like a good idea. But, as you said, it is a nervous time. Finding a decent mechanic is the hard bit, but getting the inards looked at would be a smart move. Yes, it runs perfect, and has been looked after like a member of the family, but you never will know unless you look in there.

Nothing to be concerned about unless of course they find that .......... Ohh no i wont go into details , it'll just worry you more..... But on the other hand if they discover that your......... Ohh whoops , was gunna really get you worried there :spank:..... And there was also the write up in TwoWheels about the dodgey motorcycle mechanics in SA these days after a glitch in the system printed trade certificates to 16 year old punks how actually strip down perfectly good engines and fit them with burnt out valves & all sorts of nasties , but im sure you have nothing to worry about :ban:.....

She'll be right mate , im sure there is a waiting room for you that is close to a coffee machine so you can get the caffine buzz while the surgeon's work feverishly on your pride & joys inards with precision & expertise unmatched by any other doctor in the state of SA......... Yep.....i sorta feel like my bike is about to be violated!!!!

And it's the sweetest it's ever been right now...if some mechanic screws with that....i am gonna be gruuuuuuumpy!

Hope it goes well... i know the feeling i've used nearly every Yamaha dealer in Perth trying to find a descent mechanic for my XJR. A couple of them i can't go back to cos i lost the plot and went off my trolley at them.

I'm struggling to get to my first 10,000km service.

I am currently at, wait for it, 3,300km.

Mike has to change the oil because I just don't know when I'll get that amount of km's up.

I take my car out when it's really hot here - call me a Princess (as some nameless Queenslander did in the chatroom yesterday - yes - you know who you are....) but I like air-conditioning.

You have nothing to worry about! Im 99% sure that they are fine. I just checked mine a month ago and everything was still extremely tight!

If you want to reduce the damage ($$) and wait time go ahead and pull the fuel tank, battery tray, etc. and truck it down to the shop so that the time invested in labor is much less. The manual says that the radiator needs to be removed in order to get the valve cover off, but that is rubbish. It can be done with out doing that.

Yes Dan, i am a Princess! 2 winters ago, i rode, day, night, early mornings right through winter...no car for 4 months!

that was it for me! 20 years of it was enough! Now that i can avoid the rain, cause i have both car & bike, i do so at every opportunity...

In fact, unless i can ride in my leathers these days, i probably wont ride...not really into my textile jaclets, and 3 layered water, wind, and quilted pants...feel and look like a tool anywhere other than at a bike race, or bike shop!

Having said that...walking into anywhere in a one piece race suit, with a body like mine...and everyone looks very concerned!!!

I wore my textile jacket to PI...and it was awesome, but i still wore leather bike pants!

Time and money got away from me, when we decided to set up the Workshop...so it got put off till the end of this Summer riding season...

The guy who is doing it, has actually moved into the same industrial estate to us...which is handy...we are now looking more like June, or July, this year....right when it's bloody cold, and raining a lot around these parts...

Have actually decided to do a couple of other things while the engine is out...

I know what you mean man. It IS a good reason to worry. It's just like a surgery or something! From what I've read and heard about these Fazers, if it's running that good I would be tempted to forgo the valve adjustment. I have heard from, read about, and talked to so many folks that said their valves were spot-on or several people only had one that was slightly tight. Even my local service guy said that he hadn't seen one yet that really needed the first scheduled valve adjustment! Good luck whatever you do! (I probably would)

Yeah, i run my business along the principle, if it aint broke, dont fix it...but there is always the flipside to that...if there is a problem, no matter how small, get onto it, before it becomes a BIG problem...

I have booked the bike in for this Wednesday coming....it will be a nervous wait, but i have been assured by the Workshop Manager that they know my attachment to my bike, and how much coin i have put into it, and that they will take very good care...at least i have their attention...which i should have, considering how much coin i have spent at ther shop where it is being done.

One thing that is interesting is that there is a new Workshop manager at the shop where it is being done...which is good, cause the previous one was a bit of a "Cowboy", have heard good reports about the new shop manager...in fact if the old workshop manager was still in place, i probably would of taken the bike elsewhere...
