So here's the story:

2 months ago, I ran over a nail and blew out my rear tire. I took the rear tire off and took it to my dad's garage to so he could replace and balance the tire after it took a week to ship in. So I finally get the tire after 2 weeks and put it back on.

However, I didn't realize that I had misplaced the collars in the two weeks of storage and they were moved somewhere, so when I put the tire back on I had no collars to space the tire from the swingarm. It rained for 2 weeks so I never took it out, then I finally start riding it again. After about a month of riding, I started hearing some squealing from the rear wheel and check it out to find that my brake disc had been carving into the brake caliper's brace on the right side and the lug nuts protruding on the left side had carved into my swingarm.

So I had to order the collars and it took 3 more weeks to get them. I fit them in and they don't seem to be completely flushed with the wheel like it had been - but I could be wrong since this is my first time mounting the rear wheel. Are the collars supposed to be flushed into the wheel?

Either way, by visual inspection it looks like the problem has been remedied and nothing is touching to grind away.

At any rate, it's been about two months of inactivity for my bike and the weather changed pretty drastically. Ever since I mounted my rear wheel again, it's been about 30F in the mornings when I start my bike in the carport. Whenever I pull to a stop, I can smell a smell like burning rubber or burning oil coming around the radiator area and once I turn it off and get my helmet off, the scent disappears.

So, is it normal for the radiator to emit an odour while running in the cold or could something be amiss with my rear wheel, like the oil seals being melted?

The smaller end of the collar should be recessed into the axle of the wheel and the larger end should be flush with the swingarm. A pic might help us help you.

How clean are your pipes? Might be some crap burning off or something. The radiator has no oil anywhere near it..at least it shouldn't.. nor does it get hot enough to burn it. And radiator fluid gives off a very sweet smell when it burns.

There is a chance your bearings are toast. I'm not sure it'd make a oil burning smell, but if it's not lubed or has been warped it'd get pretty damn hot fast.

I'm not sure what your issue may be specifically.. nothing in the front should be burning oil. Check your oil filter make sure it's tight.. and your oil pan bolt. I've never had to replace it, but the crush washer on the oil pan bolt might not be sealing correctly anymore might need replaced. If you lubed your chain recently maybe it's slinging lube some onto the exhaust.

We changed the oil about a week or so before the tire had a nail in it. I never noticed any smell then but it's possible.

As for the collar, it's no longer flushed on the left side. It protrudes about 1/8" out where the side of the wheel was grinded off.

What would a warped bearing cause?
