Has anyone replaced their ECU, between the CA model and the 49 state model? I'd like to know if there is a measureable difference, by way of a dyno with a gas sniffer.
Looking at Ron Ayers, there have only been two versions used on all years of production...
49 state: 5VX-8591A-10-00
CA : 5VX-8591A-20-00
This is true of the 05 and 06 bikes.... then I 'jumped forward' to 07 and compared-- Ron Ayers doesn't have an '07 FZ6 listed... so I moved on to '08
49 state: 438-8591A-10-00
CA : 438-8591A-20-00
I am almost certain that the 5VX refers to the specfic model of Yamaha, and the part number really begins with the 8591A..... the -10 and -20 refer to different modification to the basic part. That makes sense, if CA has tighter emissions requirements than the rest of the US--- all you have to do with an ECU is change the programming for spark advance, FI duration against the overall mapping, and you can make the bike run more lean, and thereby produce less emissions.
I think it's interesting that the '07 and later models (the 438 designation) run the same ECU as the previous versions, even though I am told the Mapping has changed significantly. I don't see that in the part numbers -- maybe it has to do with using the oxygen sensor input after a certain year?
