Cool, personally I am against wire taps. I have seen them over time get all nasty, corrode, and fail.

But the wiring picture is nice.
 
Highly advised by the long-time owners to not do this and do the mod correctly. Friendly warning... especially if you have tapped your power for other items such as GPS, radio, IPod, phone, etc... As stated, use of the high beams for any extended time may cause the bulb to burn out.

The correct way to do the mod is really simple and if you do either the biker dude loom or the in-line splice at the left handle bar, you are very safe.

Be careful of taking shortcuts, ok?
 
So what you are saying that it is alright to do it this way according to the diagram? What happens to the high beam? can you still use it or no? Will the bulb wear out faster then regular use?
 
Quite simple...DO NOT DO THIS MOD THIS WAY!!!

Do it the proper way where you tap into the master wiring harnes and NOT the left lowbeam headlight wire!

I originally (and others ) did the mod this way and bad things were discovered and dicsussed on SBN: Light Mod.. Done - Page 10 - Sportbikes.net

that's acutally wat i did my first light mod which drain off the battery. as i have a voltmeter on my bike. the voltage drop immediately when both were on.

It is a matter od wattage. Wired to the handle bar switched wire, you run 55+55=110. High is 55+65=120.

When you hot wire to the unswitched low beam on the left, and then switch to high beam, you are now running 55+55+65=175.

tapping into that the left low beam would result in both the hi and low beams turning on at the same time. The way I see it is that wire is constantly hot as long as the bike is running. If you tap into that wire, the low beam wire would still be hot when the high beam comes on.

my understanding that when you tap into the wire by the handle bar or near the frame, that wire runs hot until you switch on your highbeams, that way the low turn off. after staring at my right headlight and burning a hole in my retina, i'm almost 99% sure this is the case.

I tapped into the green wire in the bundle from the switch, but I put the tap down near where it enters the bike frame so it doesn't show at all. I also checked the voltage on the wire before I tapped it to make sure I got the right wire and it worked like I thought it should. I did this by poking a sewing needle into the wire and testing it with a volt meter before I tapped it.

NOTE: This is NOT the same wire that feeds the left headlight. It's a separate wire specifically for the right headlight low beam. There is NO voltage on this wire when the high beams are on, so you will not get both high and low beams on the right side at the same time.

Easy to do. No problems at all with power or electrical system. Very glad I did it.:thumbup:
