If it were up to us now we would make our own names. The early settlers were all from western europe and were terribly lacking in the "clever" department. "New Hampshire" "New York" new, new, new everything.

I'm surprised they didn't call a place New England. Oh wait...

I think everyone still had their business cards from when they left England, France, Holland etc. So it was just easier to write "new" in front of the city.
