That Sharp looks sweet indeed, but the spec on this site do not mention if it`s a 60Hz or 120Hz... I hear 120Hz is a must?
There are also a couple of bad comments about the quality of the Standard Definition (SD) signals... do any of you know why some tvs will have great HD picture, but not so great SD picture? I`d like the best of both :)
 
I work for future shop (canadian version of best buy) and I can pretty much answer any questions you got wavex. Send me a pm and I will try my hardest to get the best tv for ya. (Same goes for anyone else)

The horrible SD picture on an HD tv is often attributed to the dramatic increases in size of the television itself. As the picture becomes larger the imperfections become that much more visible. That being said I personally think the projectors and projection TVs do a worse job display SD than plasmas and LCDs (but a few years ago I felt it was reversed).

There isn't much you can do about it except make sure you have a reliable service provider who has a strong feed.
 
There was a huge thread on HD tvs already. My best resource to give you is to go to cnet.com, they review a ton of stuff. Many people love 'their brand' but the first question you should ask yourself is what will you be using it for and how much. Believe it or not most people are fine with a vizio because even though most models don't go above 720 they don't use it enough to justify the cost of a 1080. So consider saving some money.

And for the record I have a 65\" Sharp LCD and I love it.

The tv will be used to watch movies mainly... the signal will come from my computer for these... there will be some gaming too... My wife will use it to watch the Food Channel, and CBS for Survivor lol
Other than that it`ll probably be on quite a lot in the background... I do want to be ready for the future though, so 1080p/120Hz seems like a must...

For me: Vizio SV470XVT Flat-panel TV reviews - CNET Reviews is the best balance of picture size and performance. If you want larger than this you will have to look at rear projection. If you want better performance you will have to look at smaller tvs.

TV to TV there can be some differences displaying SD but for the most part there arent glaring differences. If there are then the reviews will probably note it. Eventually though you will never watch SD again. My goto is to search through my HD channels, then HD on demand, then watch a dvd, and then god forbid watch standard channels.

This is indeed a great forum. From not being a TV professional to understanding specific important details like refresh rates and the issues with displaying standard resolution signals.

As of February 2009 all TV signals will be digital so I would not be concerned that much with the quality of standard quality signal. Cheers.

I have a 40" Vizio 1080p (might have been 42") that I got from Costco for about $1000 I have in my bedroom. Its not the "entertainment TV" which is why I also have a 50" Panasonic Plasma in my basement "den" dedicated to all things HD. Including Xbox 360 and PS3. Note, Xbox Live just partnered with Netflix and you can now stream Netflix at 720p straight to the Xbox and up to your TV.

For the kind of money you are talking about, and the fact that its your FIRST tv, I would go with the Vizio LCD. Its affordable, does you a good service for the price. In addition, it leaves you a bit of room in the budget for HDMI, and digital optical cables to partner w/ your HDTV cable (or Satellite) box plus a surround sound package.
 
This forum rocks! I am getting ready to upgrade my TV to a larger LCD or DLP. I thought I understood a lot about what I was doing and this thread taught me a couple new things! Thanks to all!
 
Here are the basics that I know:

1) 720P is fine for up to 42", 1080P for larger. Most people won't be able to tell difference unless viewing at close range. If you can afford 1080P get it.
2) LCD response time is very important especially as screen size increases, I would look for at least 6ms but would not consider anything over 8ms. Lower is better.
3) Refresh rate: 120 hz should be better than 60 hz since resolution lines are displayed twice as often in a second. I have had a hard time seeing the difference on displays, but that can be because of signal, etc. If I could afford the 120 hz I would go for that since I hate ghosting.
4) Contrast Ratio: Higher is better. Again this is something that can be hard to see on displays, but from what I have seen the decent sets have at least 6000:1 or better
5) Screen Brightness: Brighter is better, gives better color. Also night seens are more viewable.
6) Blackness: LCD has trouble displaying black, so concentrate on areas you know should be black and see how true it is, if it looks more like dark gray keep looking.
7) Color Rendition: Look for a screen that displays natural color tones properly. Skin color is a good gauge. If a persons skin tone does not look right that could be a indication that that screen is of lower quality. Try to make sure when you look at the picture you get a WOW feeling. I have found that Sony's tend to give me a WOW more than others.
8) Viewing Angle: Make sure it has at least a 72 degree viewing angle or better so that the picture looks good when not looking at it straight on. Higher is better. Oh and I noticed on cheap LCD displays, if viewed from underneath at an acute angle the picture looks like it is in negative. A good screen will still look normal. This is easy to do when they are on a display wall.

My $0.5 worth, good luck, I am jealous cause I, alas, will be putting my purchase of a 50" LCD off, AGAIN!

I can vouch for the Sony sets but $1500 will not get you one of their quality sets with the new 120 or 240 hz refresh rates. Plasma was always the better gaming screen for large screens because of refresh rates. Sony released the 120hz and soon, the 240hz screens which are nearly as fast as the plasma screens.

2. Blue Ray DVD is output in 1080p as well as most PS3 games. Buy 1080p if you can!

3. Plasma screens are composed of individual lights, all fluorescent. These will burn in, they will fade and they will fail leaving dead pixels. LCD has a single (almost always user replaceable) back light. If the LCD has no dead pixels when you first turn it on, you can expect the same from it for 15 or more years. Buy 1080p LCD if you can!

4. Sony XBR6 with HDNA is technology far and away better than any other competition. There is no one competing in their realm at this time. Sony comes at a price if you want the best. Sony DOES make lower end LCD TVs to compete with the others so buying one is not much different than buying any other brand. It may be worth the time and money to save the $1500 until you've acquired more funds and can get the top of the line XBR6 in 120 or the new 240 hz. This one will do anything you want to throw at it, be it TV, games, PC, Blue Ray, etc....

I think Eric's breakdown is the best. Not too lengthy and highlights the important features. I agree, especially the 1080p. Don't get suckered in buying the 720p. You might regret it later down the road when everything will be broadcasted in 1080p. Processor speed is also important for LCD's.

the sharp aquas tvs are superb i love mine the colors are bright and vibrant and the 1080P HP is breathtaking

We're talking about two different things here. The digital transition that will occur in February is a move from analogue to digital transmission, not from standard to high definition signal quality.

What this means is that folks who are still using an old television set that is not equipped to display a digital signal will essentially see nothing but snow. But for those of us with digital televisions, the inherent quality of the picture on a standard definition channel will remain unchanged, kinda crappy.

The difference between standard and high definition is a matter of number of horizontal lines being "painted" to create the image you see. It's sorta similar to the notion of pixels on a computer screen. 480/720/1080, those are the most typical numbers of lines we'll see drawn on screen -- though there are others, too.

Standard definition is 480 lines. The low number of horizontal lines of data means that, for each line drawn, the line is required to present the image in larger chunks over the area of your screen. t's got to take fewer pieces of the image and spread them over a greater area. When you now look at high definition --1080 -- the number of lines of data drawn is that much greater. Each line is only responsible for a much smaller amount of image area to present. More lines equals finer image detail.

The "i" or "p" simply refers to the manner in which the lines are presented/drawn on the screen. Interlaced (i) images are presented as two sets of 540 lines (540 is for 1080, divide any other number by two to get its respective halves). The lines are drawn in an alternating sequence -- 1,3,5,...then 2,4,6... so quickly that our eyes can't see them being drawn, but that's the essential idea behind interlacing. The progressive image paints the lines in sequence -- 1,2,3,4... Somehow this results in higher image detail. Not sure on the guts of that one, though it may have to do with processor power. You can google the idea and find many discussions that do a much better job than I can of explaining...

As for lcd vs. plasma. As has been mentioned, lcd is backlit -- it uses light to create its colors and tones. So what this means for your picture is that it is using white light to create black tones (black/white is expressed as "tones" not colors. Colors are red, green, blue). Anyhow, making black from white is kinda counterintuitive when you stop to think about it. Each pixel on an lcd starts as white light, but in order to create black they combine all of the colors in full density to block the light and thereby render a "black" for you. While they've made great leaps in the quality of the black that lcd screens can render, there may still be this factor/notion to "overcome." At least it was a factor two years ago when I bought my plasma.

This is why lcd's will advertise their contrast value. The higher contrast ratio should give a "snappier" picture as the unit will have finer degrees/steps of value as it goes from white to its final black value. The funky thing about this is that I don't believe that there's an industry standard for how the contrast ratio is calculated and thus expressed. So you'd do well to understand how each respective manufacturer is calculating this value when comparing different brands.

I went with plasma only because my fussy eyes didn't like the quality of the black tones on lcd's at the time. Maybe this isn't, or is not as much of, an issue any longer. I dunno, I'm not doing any research on this stuff right now...I'm very happy with my Panasonic plasma. And it "only" does 1080i.

As has been mentioned, plasma's draw more power and will reach higher operating temps. Not the most green choice I suppose. Not like it's a huge power draw, but it's more than a similarly sized lcd. If you live in a small space without a/c I guess the heat that such a device might give off could be an issue.
