Anybody ever use a deer whistle on their motorcycle. For those who aren't familiar, they create a noise that deer avoid, but can't be heard by people.

Thanks,
Nick

I've never heard of anyone using them on a bike, BUT heres some info you might like to know. I used to drive for a banking company 4 days a week for about 300 miles per day. I drove this in Northeastern Kentucky and southern Ohio which is very populated with deer. I was also in charge of having the oil changed in all the vehicles. I would take the cars to a mom and pop type shop that was also a vehicle repair shop. They saw some of the whistles on one of the cars one time and started dying laughing, saying that those were the worst waste of money. They said that the percentage of the cars that hit deer with those whistles way outweighed the amount of cars without them:eek: I thought they were joking but they were absolutly serious.

The deer whistle may be categorized as a communication device. The purpose of these devices is to act as an alarm signal, which fall into three categories (Bradbury and Vehrencamp, 1998): flee alarms, assembly alarms, and alert alarms. Alert alarms do not cause the receivers to flee or to gather but to remain stationary and become observant. If the signal is linear, that is, combines readily with others, it will combine additively without distortion from the sound produced by the automobile. This would be the intent of the deer whistle. All of the alarm devices tested had the same statement regarding the anticipated response of deer to their sonic components and, in general, are viewed as acoustic “attention-getters”, alleged to elicit a response, not of flight but of attentiveness. This would allegedly preclude the animal from bolting in front of the vehicle. In a few cases, the manufacturer’s statement indicated that the device may “startle” the animal; however, most indicated that the animal was likely to acknowledge the vehicle (the sound of the whistle) by remaining still while “looking up and turning its ears.

I think they're a waste too. I mounted them backwards on my truck when I went hunting hoping it would attract them instead. Didn't work.

Thanks for all of the quick responses. I was actually given a couple from my insurance agent for free, so I don't have to "waste" any money on them. I was just deciding whether or not I should give them a shot.

Those deer whistles don't work. I've handled several car vs. deer crashes where the vehicle was supposedly "protected" with a whistle.

They're a waste of time and money.

i have one on mine....

You beat me to it... I was going to post the same thing...

that being said, My father in law hit deer after deer after deer every year with those stupid things, hypothesis is that they DO make a noise but the deer are curious about it and want to check it out...

My deer "Whistle" will scare them away for sure

I live in deer country, love my 2bros CF whistles!
They really do rouse the deer away from the road.
Nothing's going to work when that suicidal forest rat comes bolting out in front of you while chasing after some forest rat butt.

I too thought I would have little or no problem w/the Two Bro's on my FZ when it came to deer. I actually had my closest encounter with a deer bout a month ago. Luckily I didn't overreact and waited for the deer to commit to a direction, and swerved the other way. I'd say she was 5 feet from my bike when I passed her. Quite unnerving, but exhilarating as well.

Stay vigilant! Some of our deer friends are just dying to become venison steaks, or knock us out of the saddle. :)

Animals really are dumb. I drove a mountain rode in my car and almost hit a rabbit, a deer, a cat, then 5 deer at the same time. The first deer actually ran back and forth across the road because it was confused.

Then near the same road on the FZ6, I had a bird fly right infront of me at 80mph. Why would they do that?

But I've found the stebel airhorn does the best to scare anything living.

Don't have much Deer problems around here in South Wales, don't think I have ever seen one! But a mate of mine came off his bike after he hit a "squirrel" which ran out in front of him.

Maybe should of had a squirrel whistle:D

i think its actually a game... i bet all the little forest creatures meet up by the big stump and place bets on who has the bigger b@lls to get the closest to a car... animal version of Russian roulette

We have a lot of deer in Denmark and in my experience, when a deer is spooked it will run in ANY direction and not necessarily away from the noise.

Having this whistle would certainly spook them, but they may remain where they are if you just ride past.

It is another gizmo that will not get on my bike.

My friend bought 2 deer whistles - one for his ninja and 2 for his celica. Within a month he hit 2 deer in his celica and one on his ninja.

Coincidence?

Or maybe he is just a terrible driver prone to hitting deer.

Deer whistles are deer magnets.
