Cut ( short ) screen mod.. with a twist.

I started out by chopping about 1.5" off the stock screen. This helped redirect the wind lower (roughly to my chin), but the wind noise was still there (better than with Puig racing screen, but not as good as without screen at all). Turbulence was still there as well.
I got a lot of good ideas and suggestions in this thread: http://www.600riders.com/forum/fz6-general-discussion/30409-back-first-screenless-ride.html and I was going to try to mount the screen using spacers, but if you look at 07 design, it can't really be done cleanly (upper screws come at too much of an angle).
I knew the idea was to equalize the pressure and minimize the *swirl* effect, so.... borrowing the idea from a certain motorcycle manufacturer, I ended up with this:

SUCCESS!! It feels about the same as taking the screen completely off. Wind hits me square in the chest, but without the buffeting. It's much quieter now.. no whistling. Took it up to 73mph and the wind was still smooth.

Very sweet :thumbup: also I had a thought whilst looking at the screen, in the electrician field we have this stuff called snake skin but forget the real name. Anyway it looks kinda like this and might clean up the edge of the cuts. Just a random thought.

Oh yeah.. they actually make stuff specifically for screens and I have some too (came with Puig screen). I can give that a try.. as long as it doesn't mess with the air flow, it would certainly make it look nicer.

It's all about the equalisation hey. Good work on this, it's always hard to know where and how large to go. Sounds like you have the best of both worlds now - reduced wind noise but still a place to hide from the breeze at super high speeds. Sweet.

Now that I've thoroughly tested the new screen and decided that I like it a lot there was only one thing left to do... tint

What do you think would have been the result, if you had made those sized holes and left the screen the OEM length?

On my 05 I was getting bad buffeting when on the freeway (I have not cleaned the bike this week so it is a little dirty, sorry). I put a hole in the front to mimic the 07 and up. The hole really helps with the buffeting and gets more wind on my chest. I think that loosing the negative pressure behind the windscreen helps smooth out the turbulent air. The wind now comes right off the top edge and comes straight back with no turbulent air. I want to add a deflector behind the cutout to push the air right up the backside of the windscreen. Kind of like adding a laminar lip to the screen and see if it changes the wind off the top edge. Next I will try this on my touring screen and see if that helps.

Didn't get to test that, but I think it would have improved air flow (less turbulence). I wanted to lower the point where the wind was directed, so I had to chop a bit off the top too.

3 coats of lens tint paint. Can't speak for durability yet, but otherwise I like how it turned out.

I used a saber saw and a file. I found that the faster the blade went and the slower your cutting rate was the smoother the cut was. It kind of burnishes the plastic as it cuts.
