Clutch in Bike Dies

Interesting problem started last week. While riding up to a light preparing to slow down pull in clutch and release throttle to downshift and before i can release the clutch to engage the gear the bike's rpms have droped to nothing and shut off which is very unpleasant in traffic. Also sitting in garage in neutral ran rpms up to about six thousand and released, rpms dropped to nothing and shut off.

Bike info: 07 FZ6, 2200 miles

I had this problem happen right after i bought my used 2004 fz (which had sat for almost 2 years.) I had put 1 tank of 87 octane:spank::spank::spank::spank: and whenever I would come up to a light the bike would stall as i pulled in the clutch. I took it into the dealer they turned up my idle and told me to run at least one and half tanks 0f 91 octane shifting late(keep the rpms high around 10k-12k.) You can also use the center stand and go through each gear and rev it to 10k and hold it for about 30 secs and then shift to the next gear, but wouldn't you rather be riding while doing this? I noticed a big difference about halfway through the first tank and have never had this problem again. I even turned my idle back down. Hope this helps

sounds like an idle issue, what does it idle at when you start it and leave it in neutral until it gets to temperature.
 
Also there has to be a sensor that tells the CPU when to enrich the mixture because the engine is still cold. This would be some type of thermistor. Maybe the same thermistor that also gives us our temperature gauge reading. (Manual time)

Can anyone instruct me on how and where to turn the idle up? I would have to admit that I am not a mechanic by any means. I would take it to the dealer but that is about a 1 hour trip one way since the one in town closed down.
 
Its a knob with a phillips head screw insert under the tank on the left side of the bike (if you're sitting on it). You'll see it pretty clearly if you squat slightly and look in there. Just put a phillips head in there and turn it to adjust the idle. I'd tell you which way increases it but can't remember right now.

Thanks, it is a little late right now to work on it but i will tomorrow. Do you know what the correct warm idle is for an 07 FZ6? i did not see it in the manual.
 
The service manual for a 2004 says 1250 to 1350. I'm pretty sure this would be about right for other years also. When I set mine I ended up getting it between 1260 and 1360.

Is there an adjustment on the '07 and newer models? I looked and there is no screw to adjust the idle on mine. I did not see anything in the owners manual for adjusting the idle speed.

I have, the nut shown in the service manual does not turn. There is some form of loctite on it from the factory. The dealer told me it is not adjustable, and that the computer controls idle speed. I am hoping that a TB synching brings the idle back up to 1200 rpm or so. Right now it is at 800 or so when warm. Cold start it is at 1600-1800 rpm.

Could you post a picture? The idle screw is supposed to turn. The ECU doesn't do a thing for adjusting the idle, only the mixture. Syincing the TB's won't fix it either, and will most likely make it worse.
 
Uhh..there is a locking screw which locks the idle screw in position I think. Loosen the screw which is right above it, then adjust the idling screw. After you're done, tighten the screw on top.

I have never adjusted the idling on my bike, but I think this is the way to do it.

No "locking screw" on mine (05 though), but if his is that tight, there might be. It shouldn't be that thight. It should easily turn as it is ment to be easily adjusted. What does the 07 manual say?

EDIT: I just downloaded and reviewed the 07 Owners Manual and it doesn't show anything about idle adjustment.

My 08 manual also does not mention any locking screw. And I am not 100% sure of the lock screw. But I thought I read it somewhere on the forum that the screw above it is a locking screw and since his idle screw was too tight, which it shouldn't be, maybe there is one. I just went out and checked the bike and there is indeed a small screw right above the idle screw. And like I said, I haven't really done this before and I don't have a screwdriver at work to test this.

Edit: Sorry, it was an FZ6R thread that mentioned a lock nut, not an FZ6.
