Say no to motorcycle checkpoints! Urge your senator to support AB 1047!

Assembly Bill 1047, introduced by Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries , has been scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on May 8. This bill would prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies that receive National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) grant money intended for a motorcycle safety program from using the money for the implementation of motorcycle only checkpoints (MOCs).

The state of California should not permit the use of Motorcycle-only
Checkpoints (MOCs) because it would discriminate against motorcyclists.
Motorcyclists are better served by efforts that minimize injuries and
fatalities by preventing crashes from occurring in the first place. The
most efficient way of doing so is not through sporadic, discriminatory
roadside checkpoints, but by decreasing the likelihood of crashes through
education, training and awareness programs.

Send an e-letter, if you have a moment.

The Honorable Kevin D. Jeffries
California Assembly
State Capitol, Room 5128
Sacramento, CA 95814-0066
Re: Assembly Bill 1047
Dear Assemblymember Jeffries:

I support banning a law that would allow motorcycle only stops by law enforcement. There is no need for this law that would exclusively single out motorcycle operators when law enforcement already has the right to stop any vehicle for good cause.

As a legally licensed motorcycle operator I am acutely aware of constant, motor vehicle operators cell phone texting while vehicles are in motion and think government resources and taxes could be better used to stop this dangerous practice.
Sincerely,

UPDATE:

California: Gov. Brown signs bill to end motorcycle-only checkpoints
More Info

On July 13, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1047 into law, which prohibits motorcycle-only checkpoints. The law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2013. This is a great accomplishment for the entire motorcycling community.

Introduced by Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries on Feb. 18, 2011, the bill prohibits law enforcement agencies from establishing checkpoints where the only vehicles subject to inspection are motorcycles. The Assembly passed AB-1047 by a vote of 55-5 on Jan. 17, and the Senate approved it on June 28 by a vote of 36-0. The American Motorcyclist Association and ABATE of California applaud Assemblyman Jeffries for introducing this bill and thank Gov. Brown for his signature.
