Has anyone ever chopped and rewelded the subframe. Without the underseat exhaust it seems like the thicknedd of the subframe could be slimmed down and actually strengthened. Any thoughts?

If you're looking to cut weight, I believe the R6 subframe can be retrofitted onto our bike with some modifications. This would allow you to use an R6 seat and lighten the bike by quite a bit. I can't remember the weight difference exactly, but the R6 subframe is a fair bit lighter than the FZ6.

Now that I have seen it in person it is definitely loud, but not too loud. I'd say for the $40 it sounds good. I think it'd look good cut down like the second picture. Here's a link to the stuff I told you about to polish the exhaust with. Few hours of work, and some elbow grease will get them shining. I heard using one of those powerball drill attachments works well as well.
