That stuff is very abusive to jet engines.....

Since it's pretty much all silica as fine as flour, when it gets sucked into an engine is melts and sticks to the turbine blades. Doesn't take very much to unbalance one, and cause massive issues.

She's better off on the ground. Isn't there a ferry service, also? She could pop down to France, and take the Chunnel, right? Only an extra thousand kilometers....:D

I suppose we could get her down to the channel ferries and get her across that way, the chunnel and the Dutch ferries are already fully booked.

I must admit we are more than happy to have her stay a few days longer, and she is retired so she doesn't have to get back to a job, but it must be a pain for all those people stranded at the airport.

They explained on the news that the airlines have special emergency procedures for when they run into these sort of clouds. Years ago an aircraft ran into a similar cloud and all four engines cut out :eek:
 
It's happened with 747s flying between the US and Asia..... most of them go over the North pole on that route..... which puts them over Alaska..... which usually has a volcano erupting....
 
Yeah my parents were supposed to take off from LA for France this afternoon, but Paris Charles de Gaulle is closed so they're delayed until this evening (if no further delays are announced...). My mom is stoked to spend more time with her grand kids lol

I remember when I was a teenager in High School and Mt. St. Helens Blew. But the initial eruption sent ash towards the east. But I recalled there were several eruptions that sent the ash towards Portland. It was a very weird feeling to say the least.

I flew into Portland, about 3 months after St Helens erupted...... eerie to see from the air. Makes you take a good look at all the other mountains around Portland. They are all cinder cones, and plains made by lava. Easy to see the hardened lava core that blocks the throat of the holes, as the ash and pumice wears away from the sides.....

My parents drove me up to Bremerton, WA to meet up with the ship I was assigned to.... passed over the Toutle river on I-5 about a week after I landed. The mud from the Lahare was still right up against the girders of the bridge. At that point, the river was easily 50 miles 'down stream' of the mountain.

Since that time, most of the mud and ash has washed away, and the river looks 'normal' again..... except for that 30+ foot high bank it didn't have before........
 
I was supposed to fly out tonight to Geneva, to do some cycling training around the lake there. Unfortunately all flights have been canceled. Oh well, I think it's better than crashing half way there. And now I can join the Fazer Spring ride on Sunday :D
 
My dad was supposed to fly back from India on Friday. I flew back last Friday before the disruption occurred [due to work], however my dad and uncle decided stayed an extra week. Guess he's kinda happy spending more time with family over their - bloody hot out there tho, by noon temps were soaring passed 35 degrees..

My brothers friends from Japan are expecting to fly to Amsterdam for a dance this Wednesday, and then to the UK for another dance/promotion on the weekend - this looks rather bleak now, as i cannot see it clearing in 48+ hours. I was looking forward to going to Amsterdam on Wednesday to see how the Dutch favour Revival music - Bummer..! Bloody Volcano...!

Man, I hope this volcano calms down and doesn't decide to be angry all summer---I have a Europe trip booked for August. Re Vegas talking about Mt. St. Helens: I, too, remember that 1980 summer. It was overcast, ash-clouded skies for a long time (was it weeks or months?) even in Sacramento.
 
This afternoon when I drove past Johannesburg airport I saw that the Air France A380 had been moved from the hard stand to a gate so it was being readied to fly. There are still several other aircraft stuck there including 3 British Airways 747s, a Virgin A340, a KLM 747, an Air France 777 and a Lufthansa 747.
