BMW 650 GS - only one exhaust working?

Something I noticed on three different BMW 650 gs - the tip of the exhaust pipe looks like, well, a tip of an exhaust pipe that's been in use for a while. The left one, however, looks like brand new - shining metal.
Not sure what year the models were, not the newest ones i think - the cans look like they are not round but half-cylinders.

Anybody knows?

Yep,

The right one is the main exhaust, then if you look under the seat you can see a small linkage pipe from the right muffler to the left one. It is about 0.5 of an inch thick, just enough so that some gasses will pass to the left one so that it does not look too obvious.

I am not 100% sure why they made it so, but I believe the left exhaust is used as a water tank during Dakar usage. On street models they fit that low budget fix.

I drove my toyota for 3 years and it threw a rod. I was just driving down the highway minding my own business. The oil pan cracked somehow and I dumped all my oil in about half a mile. The oil light never came on, I just hear "bang" and the engine died. Didn't know what happened until I walked back and saw the piston laying on the road.

The same thing happened to my wife's toyota right before we started dating.

Going through multiple cars over the years may not be a reflection of the car itself, but perhaps the owner leased instead of bought or just gets bored easily. Having said that and having owned cars ranging from Toyota to Honda/Acura to BMW, I'd agree the BMW isn't as reliable as the Japanese cars. However, they are a ton more fun to drive! The only exception to that would be the dedicated enthusiast cars like the STi or Evo which are fun, but not very comfortable nor luxurious. What makes a BMW so incredible is how comfortable it is as a daily driver, yet so fun as a Sunday mountain road driver.

However... I replied to a post from one of my few countrymen on this forum.

Great to drive? every one better than the previous one.
