Bike got roadrash what now?

I was leaving class yesterday afternoon driving through the parking lot as usual. I passed a small building doing a little over 15mph and thats when the h3 pull out... well I grabbed all front break and the gravel did the rest. My feet from flip-flops and knees are a little cut up from trying to save the bike from falling (stupid I know) and a whole lotta pride. All 200 people outside the building just watched and no one offered any assistance. Well the bike got a little damage on the from headlight fairing and a little on he engine case. Also the front right blinkers plastic mount in the front fairing is broken, but still works. I think im going to try to maybe lightly sand the engine case and do a little black spot painting. The big question is what to do about the front fairing. I was considering doing the nubz online naked conversion before so is this a sign? A little info and reference would be nice from people who have done a simple conversion nubz or other before. Just replacing the stock blinkers with new ones would be fine to. parts list, price, links, and of course pictures would be apprciated. Heres what im dealing with its not to bad but the rest of the bike it mint.

Yes, boots. I have similar damage to my 06 from a fall. I put this reflective, red sticker right along the edge and it is nearly invisible. but it pops brightly when a headlight hits it. I know that a red reflector should be on the back, but any visibility is better than none.

Seriously , get some mesh gear dude. I've been to college station and know how hot it can get. But new skin is no fun.

yeah yeah yeah I get the whole boots and gear thing. I ride a mile one way to where I go every day then spend 8 hours in a engineering lab. If I go on any longer rides I wear boots and jeans but every day you cant beat flip-flops and cargo shorts. If your gonna be stupid you gotta be tough

That's what I did.

Now I just have the odd bit here and there that is shiny that kind of sticks out. I can live with it, but to be honest the shiny bits are really a bit of an eyesore.

There is an awesome invention called a tank bag! You can put a change of clothes and shoes in it and take it to work. :thumbup: Besides, don't most accidents happen within a few miles of home....

Not trying to bust your chops here, but c'mon man, you just had an accident in the 1 mile to your work. Not sure how much more 'proof' you need that poop can happen anytime, anywhere. Dosen't matter if it's 1 mile or 100.

Ride safe! (oh and I vote go naked....farings that is)

I would at the very least wear closed foot wear, even sneakers. Put your flip flops in your back pack if you have to have them. If you crash at a moderate speed, you probably wont be walking for a while wearing flip flops.

I have almost identical damage on the other side of my fairing from a lowside in the mountains. I elected to do nothing, because after the initial shock wore off, it really doesn't bother me that much - especially compared with the cost of replacing a fairing (and the headlight lens, which is also cracked minimally). My mirror and bar end are similarly, lightly damaged.

For the engine case, I would recommend getting some fine grit sandpaper and some flat black BBQ spraypaint. BBQ paint is rated up to like 600 degrees F, and unless you bend down and closely examine my case, you can't even tell anything happened.

Glad to hear you are physically unharmed for the most part - I wish you a speedy recovery!

I split about half and half flip-flops and shoes all depends on the day. Ill probably lean more to the shoes now.
And as for the bike yeah that little damage seems less horrific the longer it sinks in. I was thinking of the nubz conversion before anyway tho. The kit isnt bad Im not all for dealing with new blinkers and repositioning the speedo if needed.

Hi I'm Lone. I am the official gear-tester for the FZ6 forum. I have genuine trouble keeping my bike upright. I have had a variety of falls at a variety of speeds and think I am up to 7 or thereabouts now.

In my experience, boots at all times are a must because even the small crashes will cause some kind of injury. I have walked away from just about every fall I have ever been in without too much injury and in just about every case I was riding happily the next day if not the same day. Also, no time or enjoyment was lost from any other activity in my life from jogging, to sports, to work, etc.

Sure you can take the odd spill here or there with no gear or minimal gear, but to most of us the aggravation of not being able to bounce back to full enjoyment immediately is too much.

But it's up to you. It’s your flesh.

Not nagging, the lack of proper riding gear goes to the whole issue of not being prepared, physically or mentally. Flip flops and cargo shorts is asinine, period. You gotta' change your attitude BEFORE you get involved in fixing up your scratched fairing. I live in TX, too, and it gets hot in the summer but I won't roll out of the driveway without a jacket, long pants, rubber soled boots, helmet and gloves. You have to get with the program, man. Safety is job 1, then riding.

I guess times are different now, when I went to school back in the 70's to get my engineering degree nobody wore shorts or flip flops to school, it just wasn't done. In fact I can't remember anybody wearing jeans either.

As for the bike rash: without seeing all of the damage, I would say that your cheapest solutions would be to replace the "mole" on that side. The part (Yamaha Part Number: 4S8-28346-00-P1) only costs about 60 bucks and would get you back on your way. Otherwise, from what I have read, the Nubs-Shop headlight is a fairly straightforward install. As for me, I went with the FZ1N headlight kit which is available from PartsShark and Burlington Yamaha. It is a little pricier and more work to install but, in my opinion, a much nicer set-up.

Thanks for some actual help with the question. I was wondering if I could just replace that one piece or would the front assembly have to be ordered in one. When I bought the bike there was scratches in the same exact place as the damage so Im not to worried for now just looking at option.

For everyone else putting in every opinion but what was asked. Who cares if I choose to ride in flip flops or not. I ride on one straight road with a 30mph speed limit twice a day. Yes stuff can happen at any time, but ill take a lot more comfort and hassel when I get to class every day than dressing like a ninja turtle in full armor to go down the road.

Last comment.. whats up with the engineering dress attire comment? what possible relivance does that have on fixing my bike? It's 2011 things acutlly do change. Just for info im referring to a open programming acess lab with me and possibly one ta writing code who needs slacks?:Flip:

I serisouly love these threads.. onces a month usually.. hey MD, i hear you for not wanting to wear the proper gear.. why not just say "fine ill get boots, now can we move back on to what the thread is actually about".. that way people would stop knocking you for wearing flip flops.. i wont knock you, but dont knock the people just looking out for you.. would rather hear that you got the proper gear and survived (even a little crash) then not hearing from you ever again.. ride safe man!!! :thumbup:
