I have 2300 miles on these tires and the rear has started to square off. Is this premature? A friend of mine replaced his at 5k. His rear was completely square with very little tread. I do mostly city riding.

Sounds like you do a lot more rapid starts/hard braking than I do, I got 10K miles out of mine! :(
I've also learned, replace your tires as soon as they start showing signs of squaring off; the bike handles MUCH easier with good tires.

I do a ton of slab riding and I think just about any tire would square-off as a result of it. When my tires start to get a little flat in the center I'll make a point of finding some twisties to try and round it back off.

I'm riding on BT020's with aproximately 15,000 miles. I'm looking forward to soon riding on new BT016's and getting that "new rubber" feel again. Is the rear squared off? Sure, but, it's still getting me around corners/bends, curves with considerable lean. I rarely throttle jerk so it's probably contributed to me getting more mileage out of my tires. And, I'm sure that I continue to ride my tires worn down more that some others will say they want to. I run about 40PSI in the rear (I weigh 210 lbs). on a side note, I hope the same, "oh sh__" misfortune that some other forum posters have had doesn't afflict me just after I'm riding on my new 'stones---you know, NAIL or something!

I'd say that's earlier than most for squaring off, although mine was starting to square a lot at 3000 mi and it was very worn by 6000. Most of my riding was super-slab.

Check the front tire for cupping (just feel along the center tread - you'll know it if you have it). This seems to be a bigger issue with these tires. I noticed it by 3000 miles.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the BT-020s. Not bad for a stock tire. I LOVE my Pilot Roads 2s though.
