No I didn't crash but one of my Soldiers did. As he explained it he was rounding an off camber corner at 30 mph and his bike began to drift to the outside due to the camber and a poor road surface. He tried to slow but ended up hitting a truck in the lane next to him. He fell and ended up with a broken collarbone. He was wearing everything and only had a tiny bit of road rash on his wrist where his glove rolled up. He hit face first and his helmet had rash on the chin guard all the way around the right side of the helmet.

So, wear your gear.

I've seen some grusome pic's of guy's hitting face first without a full face helmet......I can't even post them on this site (they are that bad)..

Good to know he's OK. But that reminded me of this story:

You know that exercise in the MSF class where they have you walking the bike up and down just getting used to the clutch, then they gradually step you up to use a bit of throttle? So some guy at my class managed to yank the throttle and lost control of his bike during that exercise. I was on my bike doing the exercise and all I heard was "GRAB THE CLUTCH, GRAB THE CLUTCH!" I turn around and the guy's bike was all over the place...then the bike hopped over one of those concrete bumps they have in some parking spaces and slammed him face first into a loading dock (the class was in an abandoned supermarket distribution center). He had on one of those "brain bucket" type helmets that he borrowed from the class's stockroom.

I think everyone who didn't already have a full face helmet went back to the stockroom and got one right after that.

If one needs a reminder about the benefits of a full-face helmet -- or perhaps wants to point up the stupidity of the "beanie" type of lid -- one could cite the crash of Lauren Hutton. She went down on a hardly ride some years ago, I think it was out near Vegas. Anyhow, she ground her face on the road and then slathered on a layer of roadside gravel to finish it off. Nice...not.
