I've searched for discussion on tis topic but I'm thinking tapatalk's search feature might be lax.

Is there a good write up or video of removing the air box?

There isn't much to it. Having the right tools is the biggest problem. You need a real long 3 or 4 mm ball end Allen wrench to release the 4 Throttle Body (TB) tops at the air box.

  • Lift tank and secure
  • Remove battery (10mm socket/10mm wrench
  • Remove top of air box (large Phillips
  • Remove hoses (pliers to squeeze clamps, 4 total IIRC
  • Loosen throttle body clamps (3 or 4mm Allen ball pivot about 10 inches long
  • Pull up on air box and remove....
That's it. Reverse to install. When seating air box, make certain the soft rubber doesn't fold inward over the TB

Here are several pictures in an album if that helps...

Got it! Had to improvise on the hex and used a star tip but it worked. Of course I lost the bolt next to the negative screw on the battery.

I also succeeded with the dual headlight mod. It was a good day, Tater.

Just in case someone else finds this thread like me:
It was said here and in another thread that 10 inch hex key is required.
It's not so, 5 inch ~ 14cm hex key is totally enough, I bought mine in 'extra large' hex key set. The bolts are 4mm hex.

But also, thank you for raising our awareness that we need a long hex key for the job. Definitely it helped.

Longer allen keys certainly make it easier.

Also, when re-installing the airbox, a smear of red rubber grease or WD40 on the rubber gaskets help them slide into place a lot more easily than without.

Thanks for the extra advice grahammarsden. Interestingly, the airbox was very easy to detach and put back in my case.

I made some photoes during clutch cable replacement. So again, it's the 14cm 4mm hex key. On second image it's inserted into the bolt of the clamp.
Note that it's not needed to remove the airbox top to remove the airbox, I unscrewed it unnecessary on my photo.
