Adjusting clutch cable

I've got the clutch cable tightened as far as it'll go at the lever, and there's still too much play.

Where's the other adjuster/ how do I take up additional slack beyond the dial just past the lever? I can't seem to find it.

Engine side
a. Loosen the locknuts “1”.
b. Turn the adjusting nut “2” in direction “a” or
“b” until the specified clutch cable free play
is obtained.
c. Tighten the locknuts.

Its tucked in very closely to the left side of the frame... Follow the cable upwards and you'll find the adjuster. It would be considerably easier to raise the gas tank to get to it......

Well, crap.

I found it, but there's no way in hell to get a tool in there, let alone two wrenches. The adjuster's under the airbox, between it and the frame, by that annoying-to-reach clip that holds the clutch cable.

I spent 30 minutes trying to move it far enough back that I could reach it (i.e., pull it past that clip), with no luck. Not enough play.

Similarly, I tried pushing it forward so it wasn't blocked by the airbox and inaccessible from underneath, but there wasn't enough play.


Any ideas? For now, I've got my adjuster turned as far out as I can possibly get it, and the clutch is still a bit sloppier than I'd like.

I didn't even kow about that adjuster, i'll go digging tonight.

Mine also got loose, mechanic said i should replace. Can either have one built or replace with OEM, something i'll do soon.

Until then i made a plan. Just inserted a washer at the place where the cable goes into the handlebar mount. I had to cut the washer, and bend it slightly, to ensure that it doesn't slip out, or wear against anything.

It used about 1cm of the clutch cable, which was then easy to re-tension correctly.

The mechy says the cable won't break, only stretch, so i'm confident it should hold for a while.

It's easy as pie once you lift the tank and remove the airbox.
Sure, it's not the easiest job in the world, but it's not difficult.
Removing the airbox isn't that hard.

Unbolt/lift the battery lid, loosen the clamps around the outer throttlebodies(accessable with an allen key), loosen the hoses on the airbox, and lift the airbox out.
You'll have all the room you need. Repeat in reverse to reinstall.

How to fully adjust your clutch cable:

1) There is an adjuster on the same handlebar as the clutch lever. You turn that wheel to adjust the slack. LOOSEN the wheel = TIGHTER cable. TIGHTEN the wheel = LOOSER cable.

2) If you LOOSEN the adjuster all the way and there's still slack in the cable, there are 2 things you can try.

- LUBE the cable.
- 2nd Adjuster (Go to hell method)

GO TO HELL METHOD - Inconspicuously named, this procedure requries you to:

-Slacken the cable as much as you can on the handlebar.
-Lift up your gas tank.
-Lift out your battery.
-Lift out your airbox

You might be able to get around certain steps, but the airbox lid is a high suggestion.
