6000 mile service cost!!!

Just called a couple of local dealers to get a price for my FZ6 6k service. The first told me I needed my valves checked! The second gave me a price of £250! Seems like a lot of money for not a lot. Is this price typical? Its more expensive than getting a car serviced!!

Sounds about right... I paid £250 for a 12k service without the valve check a few weeks ago.

What 6K service?

The bike isn't due for a valve adjustment till 26K miles, the spark plugs are good till 15K (manual says change every 8K).

My bike is at 13,000 miles now and the only thing I've done is change the plugs once, 3 sets of tires, adjust and lube chain, keep an eye on the brake calipers and pads, check air filter and box, change brake fluid and coolant and oil changes every 3K miles.

"DIY" That's outrageous. Do it yourself.

Valve adjustment? Obviously, dealership is all too happy to perform "service" that isn't even needed.

Geesh. I don't even remember what all I did for my DIY service. About the only thing, probably, that you may not want to do yourself is the the throttle bodies--because you need a $70 USD tool for that.

Sounds about right for 13,000 miles, depending on a lot of things, tire type, riding style, road conditions, money burning a hole in your pocket, etc.

High grip = high wear

I'm on my 3rd set of tires and sitting at 18,000 miles.

Stock BT-020 - 10,000 miles
BT-016 - 5,500 miles
And currently running BT-023's

BTW, I highly recommend the BT-023's. Great wear and stick just as well as the BT-016's. Love them!

As for the OP's question...yes, that's WAY too much for nothing. As previously pointed out, there's no such thing as the 6,000 mile/km service. There's a 600 mile service, but most people skip that one and do it themselves.

No need to throw money away. :thumbup:

Hi,

I got 6k out of my stock bt020 before getting down to the wear strips. Good to see you are recommending the BT023 I think I am going to go for them.

My owners manual says service @ 600 miles, the next at 6k miles or perform an annual check if mileage is less. Thats where the 6k service came from in my original post.

My bike had the 600 mile service, then 12 months later had a 6k service at 3700 miles. What service/annual check do I need next as I am 12 months on and at 6k?

If your bike is running good, then leave it alone.
Like the man said above. Valve adjustment is not needed till 26,000k.
Check plugs about 10,000 miles, keep clean oils and fluids in it, and change air filter at about 15,000.
I was going to be a good citizen a few years ago and took a bike in early to " have things checked and adjusted if necessary". The shop screwed up my bike and had a heck of a time getting it back where it was to start with.
They made me pay for their screw up.

I have over 60'000 miles or 100,000 km on my bike and I have never had a valve checked done. I also have over 40,000 miles on my 2nd set of plugs which are iridium types.

I also get over 16,000 miles on my Michellin on every set. Some people must be donuts or burnouts on their bikes to only get 5,000 miles. Or incorrect tire pressure on every ride.

wow 16k that's going some. This is my first road bike, I don't go crazy or do burn outs - I gather Michelin's are renown for good mileage. Good luck to you, I dont want a flat tire even if tread is still legal. Servicing in the UK is important when it comes to trade in value. Can feel a triumph coming on! :rockon:
