Tragic accident near Lancaster, PA yesterday... still no word from the police on exactly what happened. The van involved was a taxi.

"Five people were killed and two injured when three motorcycles collided with a van in Penn Township Sunday evening. Penn Township police Cpl. Rodney King said three men and two women — all of whom were riding the motorcycles — were pronounced dead at the scene of the 5 p.m. accident on Route 72 between Auction Road and Graystone Road. Another woman who was riding one of the motorcycles was taken to Lancaster General Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Sunday night, King said. The driver of the van also was taken to the hospital, where he was in fair condition, King said. There were no passengers in the van. King declined to identify the victims Sunday night, pending notification of family members.

The police officer said three couples were riding Harley Davidson motorcycles at the time of the crash, apparently heading north on Route 72. "At some point, somehow, they collided with a van, and I don't know which way the van was traveling," he said. All three motorcycles hit the van in the southbound lane. "One hit in front and then the other two hit on either side," King said. "So there was some rotation of the van." At least some of the motorcycle riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, according to King. "Some still had helmets on and there were some helmets strewn about the scene, which, they could have come off," he said. "At this point, I can't tell how many had them on or if anybody didn't. I just don't know that yet."

King was not sure if speed played a role in the accident. The portion of road where the crash happened is fairly straight. "It's really hard to tell who was going which way because the van was hit in three different areas," he said.
Penn Township police had identified most, but not all, of the five people killed as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to King. "We're still trying to definitively identify some of the passengers, and we haven't contacted all the family members because we just don't know some of the names," he said. Police interviewed some witnesses who "saw bits and pieces of the accident," King said. However, he said police had not yet found anyone who saw the crash happen. "Nobody has come forward that actually saw the crash itself, so if anybody did, I'd appreciate a phone call," King said. Anyone with information should contact Penn Township police at 665-6959. Route 72 was closed between Auction and Lititz roads.

Including the five people who died Sunday night, 27 people have been killed in accidents on Lancaster County roads so far this year. Sunday's crash was the eighth fatal accident this year involving motorcycles and the second in the past four days. New Providence residents Scott Matthew Bachman and Jeremy Stephen Rineer, both 20, were killed Thursday night when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a tree that had fallen across Marticville Road in Martic Township."
