ok guys a friend of mine has a fz6 and she's having a problem.

the bike randomly stalls or "feels like its choking out" described as flooding? but she is a little flustered at the intersections when it happens so dont know if theres any strong fuel smell like its dumping fuel.

so got on here and searched stalling and got the TBS and IDLE rpm threads so went ahead and checked em.

throttle sensor

16-102 cold
16-102 at temp/hot

RPM

1260ish first start
1360-80 at temp/hot

couldnt get it to drop RPM below idle when revved or any bogs with snappy throttle movement.

I drove it around a bit to get these numbers exc... but couldnt get it to stall out like described cold or hot. one time i thought i did but i forgot i was in 3rd when i was looking at other things.

so i havnt found anything in the basics but is there anything else i can check likely culperit? throttle sync?

its only happened 3 times in the last 2 days and no issues prior she only has 600 miles of driving this bike (new to her)

So im checking the basic non intrusive things and ill be driving it a bit to see what happens but I'll be honest im leaning towards stalling as much as i know she can ride but shes a bit short tippy toed as we havnt lowered it yet so maybe shes downshifting and it feels in first but really second. Shes going to be super bummed if i cant find anything.

so being the throttle closed but WFO is high...minimally but out of spec could that be enough to cause this once in a while?

any ideas help is apreciated love the bike just having this 'issue'

Can't help diagnose at this point; seems if you're thoroughly trying to recreate an can't that it may be user error on her part ;(

What I can tell you is that my TPS has always read 16-103 and I have not experienced any similar problems like you've described.

Check the vent line for the fuel tank and make sure its not plugged up or with a low tank, run the bike with a spare key holding the gas cap partially up (definitly vented) (obviously very dangerous so use common sense) .

As for the TPS range, the slightly higher #'s will make the computer think the throttle is open more than it is and richen it up a little. Per Yamaha headquarters, the local dealership set my new TPS (recall in 04) higher on purpose trying to re solve another problem (problem was a connector with corrosion in it). It won't hurt anything..

As stated above I agree, probably operator error as the clutch does have a very short engagment area. She'll get used to it with time but it can be frustrating:).

One forum member has a mod to lenthen the engagment zone for a reasonable price and seems well designed...

sounds like we're all thinking the same thing unfortunately and i think it has a lot to do with the short engagement for the clutch on these bikes. Ill end up riding it a bit more but nothing unusual so far.

I'll look into this mod.... a different length clutch slave arm I bet any links to it otherwise im sure ill find it.

thanks

You mean like this?
When I took ownership of my bike I found the vent tubes from the tank to be completely kinked and closed up do to assembly error when lowering the tank. I can't say it caused any issues but it appears easy to make this mistake so take a look for kinks (in the areas in RED in the second photo).

OP - As for the stalling issue; so you're stating that the only time this has been an issue is when taking off from a stop?

I know I had a stalling issue with my old 04 FZ. I had done the TPS recall and after that it always read in the correct range and did not skip values when I would test it. However my bike after it warmed up would regularly drop the idle rpms from ~1260 to as low as ~650 then stall when I would pull in the clutch (shifting gears when moving or pulling up to a light).
I went back into the dealer to get this checked out. They tried re-synching the throttle bodies spark plug replacement drain full tank and replaced fuel lines and it would still stall and drop rpms. Well it ended up being that the replacement TPS was bad even though it read the correct values and did not skip numbers when you tested it. When they replaced it again the bike seemed to work just fine, at least that's what the dealer I traded it into told me. If hers had the recall they should replace it again for free if it is truly a bad tps sensor. A bad tps sensor can cause some weird problems

Thanks for the links and info guys I'll give it some more time see if it happens again before i start wrenching due to the previous mentioned reasons... lol

I will say this this is why i like wrenching as mechanical things are not effected my emotion and pride lol if its broke its broke if not grip and rip.

ill keep this thread informed of any outcome as we continue to "test"

well so far another couple hundred miles and no issues aside from a new rider learning on a touchy clutch and too tall a bike. so off to find lowering options (spring) and possibly clutch lever mod.
