I would start with lubricating the shift linkage at all points clear to the gearbox. It improved mine 1000%. It is now part of my regular maintenance.

I think it is annoying to close the cap with the key too. I would like to put the key back in the ignition after opening. Thanks.

Easy on the up shifts (the higher ones). Down shifting takes some practice to match the rpms to the gearbox.
