I'm stuck, I took off all the bolts the manual mentioned, but I can't get the axle to slide out. There is a huge bolt looking thing on one side of the axle, am I supposed to unscrew that? If yes, what size is it / what tool should I get?

Try booting your computer with a linux liveCD ( Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu ). If it doesn't work then nothing else will, and it will at least tell you what is wrong with it.
