    Suggestions for San Francisco trip

My daughter and I are flying out to San Francisco to visit family in May. And since my FZ6 won't fit in the overhead bin on the plane, I've rented a BMW k1600gt to ride while we are out there. I know there are some great roads in the SF area, and would appreciate any suggestions for day trips...

August 16-18, 2013 - Skyline Dr, Blue Ridge Pkwy, and West VA

I can't commit definitely, but this ride is intriguing. I live in Fairfax Station, VA, which is about 1.5 hours east of Front Royal. I've ridden south on skyline dr as far as Rt. 30, but would love to go further. My main concern is the weather. The potential for significant thunderstorms...

    Throttle Meister Cruise Control

I installed a Throttle Meister about two years ago. It works as advertised, but i find I use it a lot less than I thought I would. The only time I find it convenient is while on light traffic highways. If traffic is heavy, or the road twisty, than I feel more comfortable without employing it.

    Back in the saddle

I'm back, Baby! Today, for the first time since I broke my leg on my FZ6 back in November, I was able to fire it up and ride. I can't begin to covey how great it felt to once again cruise down the road on my bike. I took it easy, and headed to the local high school parking lot to practice low...

    Protective motorcycle footwear

Now that the day I can once again ride my FZ6 is near, I'd like to ask if anyone of you have any advice regarding ankle protective motorcycle boots. I broke my tibia on my FZ6 when i hit a muddy patch on a gravel road. Even though I was traveling at walking speed, the resulting fall torqued my...

    last ride for a while

I'm happy to report that I took my first crutchless steps since the incident today. A bit unsteady, but steps nonetheless. I'm doing physical therapy to rebuild the strength and range of motion of my ankle. Hopefully it won't be long before I can clean up the FZ6 and get back on the road. I...

The mud got me...(first time down on the roadbike)

The situation you describe was exactly the same one I encountered a month ago. A 5mph dump that, in my case, resulted in a tibial fracture requiring surgery and 3 months of non weight bearing, crutch dependent, limited mobility, motorcycleless recovery. Believe me when I tell you it sucks...

    last ride for a while

I'm happy to report that surgery went well and my doctor predicts an excellent outcome. I'm a bit loopy from all the narcotics I need to take for the pain, but that will diminish as I taper off of them. The whole hospital experience was a lot more pleasent than I expected, but whenever I...

    last ride for a while

Once again I am grateful for all your good wishes and positive thoughts regarding my recovery. It really does brighten these otherwise dreary days, and speaks volumes about the wonderful folks all over the world who ride the FZ6.

    last ride for a while

Finishing my first week recovering from my broken leg. I'm bored. It was certainly bad luck to wind up this way from a low speed lo side that 99 times out of a hundred (or more) would require nothing more than standing the bike up and cleaning up some muddy parts to get home. My route home...

    last ride for a while

I hit a muddy patch of road at maybe 6 mph and the bike just slid out from under me before I knew it. The bike fell on my left leg while sliding on the slick Virginia clay.

So it turns out that I have what is known as a pilon fracture, and that after surgery I will be non weight-bearing for three (!) months. All from a low speed low side while fully geared up. Just goes to show you never know what awaits you. Ride safe everyone.

    last ride for a while

Once again, I am touched by all of your well wishes. To answer your question Dr. Rob, I don't have the X-rays to post, but I've seen them. It's a fracture of the distal tibia which may involve the ankle joint. I'm an optometrist not an orthopod, so I don't know all the technical...

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. Come next spring, I'll be back in the saddle.

    last ride for a while

In in the ER now waiting on a consult for my broken left tibia. I was Riding slowly on a gravel road and hit a muddy area. The bike fell and the result is a badly broken tibia. Kind of puts a damper on the day.
