Help me decide on a truck

If a cheap high quality truck is what you are lookin for, I agree with alot of people here that a nice brand new or brand used Toyota Tacoma is the way to go. We had an old used 1992 toyota truck that had about 600,000 mi on it we used to carry all kinds of junk before it lost a cylinder. Not the strongest of trucks, but very reliable.

yup everything really is bigger in texas, the people the useless trucks, etc..... sorry i see no point in an extreamlly jacked truck... the axels are still low you still have no more ground clearance not to mention you are gonna spend more on gas..... pointless.....

The only logical reason to "jack" a truck is to fit larger tires to lift the axles. Most guys with 6"-26" lifts don't really care about off road driving anyway, they're just in it for the mall crawlin.

As far as the Tacoma, it's a great choice. If you need more space/capacity, the Tundra is an awesome truck as well and it's fuel efficiency rivals the Tacomas.

A contractor that worked with us had a lot of problems with his Canyon. When I was looking at little trucks I thought about it and discussed it with him. The Toyotas were big on my list but they didn't get any better gas mileage than a diesel. I gave up on the little trucks, and ended up buying a used diesel.

I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab 4x4. It's been great. I went 100,000 miles with just routine oil changes and tires being the only maintenance items. Just had the 100,000 mile service completed and ready for another 100,00miles. Great truck. I would buy another.

Mine is equipped with the 3.5L 5 cylinder with auto trans and I manage 21mpg mixed city/highway.

I borrowed a 2008 2wd 4cylinder model (2.9L I believe) with auto trans over the weekend and managed to average 26mpg over 500 miles of highway driving. The engine was peppy enough to allow passing on 2 lane highways. Its no FZ-6, but it manages to get around ok.

Thanks for all the great replies. I didn't pick one of the GMCs today, and I'm going to test-drive a Tacoma as soon as I get back from Phoenix this week. Sounds like some of you have had great luck with the Gimmies, though, too, so I'll just keep looking and trying and thinking and...

(oh, and my old truck wasn't a Tacoma. Back in '92, Toyota only had one truck, if I'm not mistaken.)

Nobody has mentioned the Honda Ridgeline yet...might be worth a look. I've heard and read good things about it. Plus it's a Honda.

I'm glad you are looking at the yota. I was really sad when I sold my 4Runner. Great truck!!

When it comes to trucks and gas mileage keep in mind the intended use. A truck with a smaller engine and less torque that is using all its power to do the work you need will use way more fuel than a truck with a bigger motor that doesn't have to work as hard. Now if you are driving around with no load a majority of the time then get the truck that fits its workload best.

It's like the Chevy "Change for a Buck" truck. We had a guy at work that got so sick of us teasing him about it, it traded it for a Tundra.

I know I already chimed in here. Glad your going to go look at the Toyota. They are just better. Little stupid stuff, like the reach to the radio, the intuitive nature of the controls, the fasteners, just everything about them quietly says this is made to last, and we are proud this truck.

Another one you might look into if you want to save some $$ is an '05/'06 Tundra. Still a fan-freaking-tastic truck, even though it's a good bit smaller than the new Tundra, and they can be had for a steal, especially off of a used Toyota lot.

Bought her today, a used 2008 with 8,000 miles on the odo; her previous owner bought her then married a gal with another Taco, so they sold his (can see who wears the pants... ). Got it for $800 less than dealer invoice (and they still had four '08's on the lot) so I think I got a good deal. Six-speed manual trannie, so I think I'll get the best mileage I can, and the 4.0L V-6 pulled fine up the steepest local hill. Trailer hitch included, so now I need a MC trailer, track days here I come! w00t!!

Congratz Botchie It is a fine looking truck. I myself have an 02 Silverado that I love. I drive it every day to work (4mile commute), I can't wait until my husband puts the magna flow exhaust and the cold air intake in it My husband drives the Altima since he drives over 100miles per day round trip. We try to be as practical as we can. We have 2 dogs that sit in the extended cab and we lug stuff all over. My bike will fit in it too, although we bought a trailer from our friend...hrmmm he borrowed it back from us about 8 months ago...hehe
