Any Suggestions For A Helmet Lock?

Whats Up Guys,

Just wondering if anyone uses a helmet lock to secure their helmet instead of carrying it around everywhere. Am about to start college and don't want that pain in the ass of carrying it around campus all day. So suggestions would be great.

I have a carabiner zip tied to my bike. However, if I am on campus I take my helmet with me or it would be gone when I come out (big deal in Michigan you will get a ticket.) I do the same thing and use a carabiner to clip it on to my backpack with my jacket.

I use something similar, see pic attachment. It's just a master lock, one of those that allows for different sizes. I can attach one or two helmets to it.

As I said in the other post about helmet locks theft would not be my first issue.. I'd never leave it on the bike because I couldn't trust that it didn't get knocked by somebody and therefore would no longer save my life in a crash. Don't you have lockers in college?

Good point, I've had a helmet stolen once before. I felt like a dummy because I didn't try to lock it, and forgot about it. When I returned it was gone. The really sad thing was it was an Icon Decay that I bought only a few weeks before. Lucky for me there was someone there with an extra helmet so I could get home. With all that said. I don't like to leave my helmet out where people can see it. But when I really can't take it with me I keep a lock with me.

I think someone would have to intentionally bash your helmet for it to have any effect on the safety characteristics of the helmet. I know all helmets come with the warning label that if you drop it you are supposed to dispose of it and replace with a new one (preferably from the same company ), but someone hitting your helmet with their knee or bag isn't going to ruin it.

Now if you're talking more about someone tips your bike and it lands on the side with the helmet, then yea, you've got some problems.

Well there are some pretty warped people out there, I wouldn't put it passed someone to give it a good bash for the fun of it, or to try and get it off the lock. The thing is with helmets you very rarely see damage on the outside, so I just wouldn't take the risk.

I've seen a helmet that was cut in two for show. The person who was the owner had crashed due to falling asleep while riding. The outside of the helmet looked fine, just a few scratches and scuffs. but on the inside it was all compressed. My point being, it's not so easy to determine the amount of damage to a helmet by looking at it.

i guess only the new 08's have the helmet lock that come with the bike? i dont think i'll be having a problem when i go back up to college tho because i've noticed the area where the bikers park (right on the quad so there is also always people and other sudents walking by) that some just leave their helmets there with their bike and lock the bike instead. its one of those things you'll have to deal with if your not going to lock it with the bike and have to carry it around with ya. but then again, in college, whats wrong with walking with it in a class where there could be some potential dates as we all know how girls can be attracted to bikers right. lol. sounds and looks kind of c0cky but hey, what else can we do?!

now if you take some engineering classes like me, then just park out back by the lab and lock the helmet, no one to impress inside really. lol.

Oh, I know. I dropped one of my cheap HJC helmets off the back while ridding around the neighborhood one day at ~45mph. I didn't need it anymore and it wasn't worth very much in the first place, so I put it on the band saw to see the insides. The foam will compress and seperate under the plastic shell without showing the damage on the outside. I'll see if I can dig up the pictures when I get home tonight.

I'm just saying, it think it takes more than a casual bump to ruin a helmet.

But I 100% agree, keeping a helmet with you at all times or storing it in a locker is the best bet, though dragging one around all day may lead to more chances of you damaging it.

What part of the bike would this attach to? I'm assuming handlebars, but it'd be pretty cool if it fit around where the seat lock is.
