Jeans on asphalt

A fireman friend of mine told me about a guy in jeans going down at 20mph - and needing a skin graft! Now when I ride in jeans, they're Cortech Mod jeans. Not as much protection as my overpants, but a whole lot more than my Levis.

For not much more than the price of a couple pair of riding jeans you can get a really nice pair of textile mesh overpants. I think mine were about $180, but I've seen comparable pants for under $100.
I didn't buy them for the extra protection, though - I got them for the convenience of being able to wear whatever I want to under them. Rather than "getting dressed" for riding and making sure I have my good jeans, I can just throw boots, pants, and a jacket over whatever I'm wearing and go. So when it's 90+ I can wear gym shorts and get a nice breeze on my legs through the mesh without being a squid.

In my past experience (and this has been quite a few yrs ago) Standard Normal Weight Levis will last about 2.1" in a slide and offer absolutely nothing for impact.

Been drooling over FZ6's and think there may be one in my future. I tried the cruiser route and just can't do the recliner. I have been riding Bikes in one form or another for 42 yrs now.

:welcome: Can't go wrong the FZ6 in my book. Perfect commuter, fun in the twisites, docile in the lower end of the power band and a beast starting at 7 or 8K (with a 14K redline). I can have only one bike, adn this one does it all.

It sounds like some people on here are trying to justify wearing jeans on a bike...you do not need to justify anything on here.
If you think ordinary jeans, wether they are casual or work jeans will do a good job in saving you fom gravel rash then go ahead and wear them.
I will stick to my leathers and kevlar lined jeans.
Do not forget there are different road surfaces. on smooth tarmac levis may last a few seconds. On a hard gravel surface you would be better off being naked so the hospital does not have to get shredded jeans out of the wound.
There is no replacememt for correctly designed and constructed motorcycle gear. If you cannot afford it then buy a cheaper bike.

the last time I remember looking at the speedo before going down it read 48mph. I was on the throttle trying to keep the swingarm extended as far as possible. I was scraping peg and on the edge of the tire.
I slid all the way across the road from the inside of the inside lane to the ditch on the outside lane. On my ass, boot sliders, elbow and shoulder. Like sliding into first base.
Not a scratch on my body.

my OldNavy jeans lasted about 1 second before the skin on my ass slowed me down....that was about 2 mos. ago . I still have large scars from the road rash. ALWAYS wear my overpants now.

Is this accurate? I bought my bike for commuting to work. I have a mesh jacket, helmet, & gloves. I want to get boots and mesh pants. The kevlar Jeans are nice, but I can't buy 5 pair to wear all week. Work attire is relaxed, so shorts or jeans are fine, but I would never ride in shorts. Are the mesh pants really enough?
BTW - new hear and loving it so far. I was originally looking for a yzf-600r, but found a great deal on a '04 Silver fz6. I started on a '91 GS500, then 99 zx-6 (not R), and then a brand new '02 GSX-R750 (Had to get rid of it to finish college). I finally have the opportunity and savings to get a bike and wanted a good sport touring model for commuting and fun. Glad I found a great forum with helpful folks.

The only thing I wonder about the jeans is how much of the heat is transfered into your skin when you slid? In principle I would consider them now I have read a bit more about them.

My ass was hot. Well its always hot, but that day it was extra hot. I thought I had rug burn from the pants but it was just the heat from the slide.

We use it in ropes for the sail making industry.
I can cut it with a pair of scissors but could hold a hot knife on it all day and it will not touch it.
Because of this it would be great for protecting you when sliding down the road and I can only imagine the design of the weave prevents it from cutting up.
I would love to get some kevlar lining and line my own jeans because I do not like the design of Draggin Jeans.

Nope it was uphill, basicly across the road not down the road.

I have looked at both with interest. I am such a skeptic though, are they really using the "off the peg gear" or the proto type?
