+1 Fred... jeans will not protect from impact. Most people are worried about road rash and forget about smashing your knee to pieces.
Jeans are my choice for putting around or work commute. I have either leather or mesh pants for spirited rides (weather dictates which I wear). Florida summers are not fun with leather pants.
Fieldsheer mesh pants were the only I could find that fit me well. However, the thinner mesh made me nervous about testing it's protection in a real scenario so I forked out the money for kevlar liners made by Draggin Jeans Draggin Liners The liners fit perfect under the pants and they are also mesh so airflow is great.
Yea kinda spendy for protective summer garb... mesh pants $110, kevlar mesh liners $150, total $260. How many people have you heard whining about not having money for good gear but they will spend $300 on bling or other crap that they really don't need.
