oil light came on

hey guys just woundering if anyone else has had a problum with there oil light coming on. i was on the way to work this morning (30min to work) and my oil light came on as i was at a steady 78mph, going stright down the road (not turning). i pulled to the side of the highway shut her down and checked to make sure i didnt spring a leak. did see any so i checked the oil level, looks good to me right to the top. so i started back up and the light was still on. i proceded at a much slower 65mph and about a min later it went out. on the way home tonight it didnt come on either. i did a oil change on it at 500 miles and have about 700 on it now. the oil light did come on at first after the oil change for a min but have never seen it the last couple of weeks of driving.
do i have a messed up oil sender switch? anyone else had a problum like this?

Have you changed the oil and filter yet?
What kind of filter?
Have you added any oil additives? Lucas?
It may be the sending unit got a piece of trash in it, but thats still not good. Never never never ride with the oil light on unless you know for a fact the sender has failed and even then its not smart.

It is not a level sending unit
It is a pressure senseing unit. If its on it means you have oil pressure to low to spin the motor without bearing damage.

Umm.... Page 3-2 of my manual states that indicator no. 6, which is the little dripping oil can symbol, is the oil level warning light. Further states that "This warning light comes on when the engine oil level is low" and "Even if the oil level is sufficient, the warning light may flicker when riding on a slope or during sudden acceleration or deceleration, but this is not a malfunction." Regardless, one should certainly take the steady appearance of this light very seriously.
Regarding vehicles in which the indicator does indicate low oil pressure, a mechanic friend of mine once told me that they should more properly be called an "engine rebuild required indicator" rather than an oil pressure indicator.

You are most definitley right and I am wrong. I went out there and found the sending unit at it is definetly a level sending unit. I could not find a oil pressure sending unit on the bike anywhere. I found the temp sender and the oil level sender. Very Very odd, normaly they are a pressure sending unit.

yes i did change the oil when i got to 500 miles. a litte befor its recomended for your first oil change but i figured there will never be a time when there is more little metal files in the oil then during brake in. i used 10w30 valvoline motorcycle oil and a 14610 oil filter (car purorlator). like i stated befor been driving it for over 200 miles now with no light and it just came on for about a min in total time. i did a lot of searhing about using the car filters and really dont think thats the problum.

i also did see last night myself after i posted the orig post in the owners man that it is a level light, not a presser light. i was on flat ground, not changing lanes going a steady 78 mph. maybe it was like wright said, just a little somthing that hit off the sensor and triped it. (metal flakes )
any other ideas guys, it would be nice to have :noworries:

I keep looking for the oil light to be on for a sec after startup and it hasn't. I thought it might be broken. Now that I know it's oil level, I feel much better.
