Sprocket

Quick question - why would a sprocket change in either front or rear affect the spedo reading? Doesn't the spedo go based on the front wheel's rotation? Or does the spedo interpolate the velocity as a function of engine speed + gear selection?

Inquiring minds want to know! LOL (Does anyone in the U.S. remember those ads?)
 
Im in the process of buying a new chain and sprockets. Is a Vortex Sprocket & RK Chain good brands. It has Aluminum rear sprocket? Or is there other kits that yall would suggest.
 
-1/+2 will be drastic IMO... why not try the -1 in the front first and see how you like it? If it`s still not enough go with the +2 in the rear on top of it...

and no, -I think- you can keep your stock chain with -1/+2... anything more than that and you`ll need a new chain.

On my 04 I had -1/+2, on my 06 I have -1. I like the -1 better it gives a good response without the higher revs that the 1/2 did.

It runs off the gear box.
 
I am sorry but where are you getting your facts from?

an R1 engine lasts longer than a 600 engine because it "turns over slower?"? hmmm

And I don`t think there is any data out there supporting your statement that dropping a tooth in the front will decrease engine life... your engine is exactly the same, and its output as well... yes you`re running higher rpms on average, but the impact on engine wear is insignificant imho. The R6 engine was designed to run at very high rpm all day long, I don`t think going from 5k to 6k or 7k on average will make any measurable difference.

Look, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that the more an engine turns over the more wear results. That's all I'm saying. You can't possibly be arguing this point, or are you?
 
What gear are you folks in when you are referring to RPM? On mine, in 4th gear running minus 1 front it increased the rpm by almost 400 at 60mph. Increasing the rear by 2 more would making it even more. The overall difference on the final is 2.87:1 vs 3.2:1 when going from 16/46 to 15/48 and that's huge.
 
Gear ratio will affect mpg and horses but be aware that if the sprockets are severly worn and the chain is new or vise versa you will lose horses and mpg. You will wear out the new parts much faster whatever they are when combined with old drive parts. Clean is the name of the game. I desert raced a banshee years ago and making things last a few hundred miles was tough. Gearing also affects clutch wear coming of the line and shifting. Especially if you ride hard. Put an old chain on new sprockets and have someone ride next to you and they will watch the chain dance.
 
I've been thinking of going 1 down on the front for a while. I have over 20k on the stock chain and sprockets and I don't want to do it till I need new ones. Here's a good site to help you play around with the numbers. Gearing Commander: Motorcycle Gearing Ratio Sprocket RPM Speed Chain Calculator You can put in the 04 Fazer 600 when selecting the model and the stock gearing will be the same on all of them I think, it is on my 07. Then you can look at the charts and it will tell you the differences. Good site.

P.S. You can look in your owners manual and find the gear ratios to make sure they match what is on the site.

In using the stock information for my 2004 FZ6 at 16/46 I found the calculator to be way off what actually appears on the tach of the bike at 60mph which is the easiest place to get a read because 4th gear at 60 is heads up, 60mph and 6,000rpm. Also, remember that gearing will have no effect on HP when it comes to the roller run. It will make things easier or harder depending on which way you go but the hp will be the same or relative depending on the conditions at the time of the run..

I figured there would be some degree of error in those numbers somewhere. Still good base line information.

No. It is measured through the transmission. So when you change the output shaft speed (meaning with a smaller sprocket it has to turn faster to go the same speed) you will read a little faster.


On a side note i did a test yesterday and the speedo isnt really that much off. All the way up to 80mph the speedo matched my car.

If you compare the FZ6 with a sat nav the speedo is way off. 2-3 mph at speeds of 30 - 40 mph. At 153mph speedo reading my sat nav gave me 142 mph. I found that at 75mph and above the error was between 9 - 11 mph.
The speedo is off IMO. I guess the only way of really knowing is to ride side by side with wavex and she what his speedo computes.

"The more the engine turns over"? Are you trying to say that the faster the rpm the lower the life of the engine? I agree that in theory, that makes sense, but in practice I am not sure. I am not certain that running the R6 engine at 4k rpm all the time is better for the life of your engine than running it where it's intended to run, i.e. in higher revs. It was designed to run at higher revs...

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that that dropping 1 in the front probably has close to no, or no impact at all on the life of your engine. Stating that people should be weary of doing such a mod due to impact on engine life is ludicrous IMHO.

Either that you use your GPS to compare. GPS data is much more accurate (I actually used my GPS to help me calibrate my koso). :rockon:
 
Alright kids....

Gearing will not change HP or torque, it will change thrust. Gearing is just like leverage. When I put my truck in 4LO, it still makes the same 220ft.lbs. as when it's in 2HI, but watch out, because nothing is going to stop those wheels from turning.

When considering the same exact engine, more revs = more wear, period. Whether that is relevant or not depends on a lot of things. For me it's not even remotely relevant, my bike will be totalled or sold long before the engine needs any real work.

Our stock tach is optomistic, just like our speedo. by how much? I'm not sure...but you all remember the 17.5K R6 redline snafu.

For practical purposes, MPG should only be measureably different when top gear is required. If a stock bike is running next to a -1/+2 bike, both at say 50MPH, maybe the stock bike is in 3rd and the modded bike is in 4th. If the stock bike runs through some twisties in 2nd, chances are the modded bike will run through in 3rd....with both bikes at or around the same RPM.

Are you sure of that Nate? I read and was told that running an engine too low in revs for a given speed was actually worse for an engine than the opposite... so even though higher revs mean higher wear, I am not buying the blank statement that engine life will go down as rpm average goes up. I don`t think it`s as linear as you think.

Yeah positive, no one mentioned lugging the engine as you described. Moving parts create wear...move them more, get more wear (within an acceptable range that does not involve lugging etc.).

So yes, in theory, higher rpm means higher wear, but back to the original topic; whether -1 in the front will have a noticeable impact on engine wear or not... I would still say it's negligible.
