First Service on 08 FZ6

I'm getting ready to purchase my first bike. Today I talked with the dealer and he informed me that I should expect to pay 400-500 bucks for the 600 mile service. I dont know if that is negotiable (most things are).

Should I expect to have to pay for this service, especially this much? If it is just an inspection and oil change, can I do it myself without compromising the break in of the bike.

I just changed my oil/filter at 600 miles... there isn't much more to do, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I let the dealer do my first one. Yamalube and Yamaha filter $100
all they did was change the oil and adjust my clutch. I put it back where I had it before leaving the parking lot.

Get the K&N KN204 filter from Autozone and oil from anywhere.
I use Rotella synthetic.
$500 dollars is not normal.... for a first service.

Do it yourself... change the oil & filter and check the bike over to make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight.... They were about to rip you off.....

Look in your manual, there is a checklist of things to do....

Basically change the oil and filter and that is it.

Do it yourself.... it's not mandatory that a dealer do any work on your bike (except maybe warranty work) period. If something happens and your bike needs warranty work, all you have to do is produce the receipts that proves basic maintanence has been done on regular basis...

Stevesnj if it is 500 bucks you are about to be taken to cleaners! I just wonder how much 5000 km or 10000 km service costs, 3000 bucks?

Definitely do it yourself. We did first oil and filter change after first 200 km and we'll do it again on 1600 km. You need minimum of tools, filter and some 3 l of oil. It is a piece of cake. While aided check things how to do dual light mod (I still can't believe Yamaha didn't do it in the first place).

$500.00? Are you sure that's it? Because, if it is truly only $500.00 you got a B-A-R-G-A-I-N. Seriously, was the shop person brandishing a shotgun or something when he/she quoted this? Just curious....I would not---no, make that NOT ever bring my business to this dealer. They are RIP-OFFS. Tell them that you're going to find a REAL dealer the next time you want somebody else to work on your bike. Furthermore, there should be a perimiter around this shop with crime scene yellow tape...probably will require 500+yards of crime scene tape.

I had my first serviced last month at the dealers. Cost me around $110, changed oil, filter, adjusted chain tension and clutch was all I could tell. They should check nuts and bolts as well. I plan on doing my own oil changes from now on.

Yeah, there's really not that much to that first service, and all of which can be done at home. I really have no intention of taking the bike back to the stealership, unless I need something warranty related done.

Besides, this forum is FAR more of a trustworthy "mechanic" than most stealerships... and I happen to actually LIKE mine too.

thanks to all for the responses. Maybe I misunderstood, but I don't think so. I remember being shocked when he said it.

Later that day, I also had an unpleasant experience while looking at helmets and jackets. Nothing specific, just a general feeling that the sale guy didn't really care about my questions and was providing a pleasant yes/no answer without explaining or educating.

I've since found another place that seems more interested in a relationship rather than just a sale.

Never go to a dealer for service...i work at a car dealer, in the parts department, and i can tell you we screw everybody.

I know it is mean but its the truth.

Just change the oil and filter and ride it till 3000 miles, change the oil again and ride it till 6000 miles, then change the oil and ride it till 9000 miles.....i think i see a pattern.


I would just change the oil every 3000 miles and ride the mess out of it. Somewhere around 26000 miles i would put a fresh set of plugs and give it some fresh coolant.:thumbup:

I paid about $100 for the 600 and just paid $162 for the 4,000, both at the dealer.

DIY...Oil, filter, and per the book an FI body sync. You can buy the sync tool for about $99.00. Fred has posted a very nice video on how to do the sync. Oh, you might want to clean and oil your chain, and check the air in you tires. Other than that, don't pay $500.00. Simply save your receipts for the oil and filter for your records.

Remember, don't forget the crime scene yellow tape. I don't know where you get some but maybe the local police station could let you have 500 yards or so. That dealership needs to be thoroughly taped off so that no other unsuspecting souls get shark bitten. Lemme know if you might need help; maybe I could help organize a posse.

even if you go to a yamaha dealership and to be honest yamaha can void your warrenty if you do not use a yamaha filter! dad was a dealer for 10 years saw it happen. anyway all u need is 3 quarts of oil and a filter so even if u use yamalube ur only looking at $50 im sticking with yamalube and yamaha filters till my warrenty is up then its fram and amsoil.
