Gearbox clunk

Hi guys,

I've only just passed my motorcycle test a few weeks ago and went out the very next day and bought my FZ6.

I'm absolutely in love with it!

Seeing as I've just passed my test & with it being my first bike then I know very, very little about the mechanics on my bike. When shifting gear from 1st to second I've noticed the gear change seems to be quite clunky but shifting from 2nd up over is fine. Is this normal or is it something to do with my riding technique? Any help is greatly appreciated. :thumbup:

Congratulations on passing your test.

The clunk from 1st to 2nd is normal. My husband can even hear mine do that from his bike. If you're going super slowly and shift up to 2nd at a really low rpm, maybe 2,000 or 3,000, it doesn't clunk as much. But for regular riding/shifting, it clunks. You'll get used to it.

Also, going from neutral (especially cold) into first, you can decrease the clunk a little bit by holding in the clutch for a little bit (5-10 seconds), it'll allow part of the transmission to stop spinnig and lessen the clunk..

As you ride it more, there is a spot to shift from first to second, right around 17-19 MPH. As you hit that speed just right, it will slip into gear without the loud clunk otherwise. It depends somewhat on your technique and how fast you are accelerating. You could pull the clutch at 17 and actually shift about 20 and have it be really smooth too, at least from what I've seen on my bike. YMMV.

Couple of thing helped my shifting. Used to run Rotella Synthetic but changed to RedLine synthetic which helped slightly. Biggest change is to preload the shifter - put upward pressure on the shift lever before you make the shift.

As others have said there is a sweet spot when Rev matching but at 12.5k you won't notice it! :spank: j/k!
Make sure you have APPROVED gear to cover EVERYTHING and sign up for the first safety course you can (well if you haven't already).
