This morning I rode into work as usual, only just before I was there (my commute is 45 mins) I pulled in the clutch (to change gear) and got no response. On releasing my clutch I noticed that the lever didn't spring back as it should. I pulled in and stalled the engine.
I had expected to find that the clutch cable had broken, but this was (unfortunately) not the case. The cable seemed intact and connected at either end.
As I was close to my work I called a colleague of mine (who also rides, and does most of his own maintenance). He drove out to me and quickly said that there was something wrong with the clutch itself. Anyway I started the bike and rode the remaining 500 meters to my work (on the cycle path), stalling it when I got there.
Luckily I'm a member of the ANWB (the Dutch version of the AA or AAA) so they came to firstly check it out, and then sent for a truck to pick up my bike and take it to my dealer.
Anyway I'm hoping they can take a look later today, I'm a bit apprehensive about what this is all going to cost

It could be something as simple as a broken spring or plate inside the clutch. As long as it hasn't been abused, I'd guess the repair shouldn't be very costly or complicated.

Thanks for the encouraging words Champ, I don't have any idea about how it all works, I just assumed when they say they have to open it up to have a look that it will be expensive.
I've never abused the bike, although I did do a riding course last weekend and I had to do more "clutch control" than usual.

It turns out it was the cable in the end, it had stretched out and although it appeared to be moving the "actuator" (sorry don't know the correct term, that turny thing that goes into the clutch housing :o), it wasn't moving it enough.
It's now repaired (for a reasonable price) and I'll be picking her up again tomorrow.

My bike is kept outside, so I guess it's time for Travis' (Chemiker) cable lube

Nice to hear it wasn't anything too bad. I just bought the EZglide kit this morning. My 07 probably needs it pretty bad. Owned it almost a year now and haven't lubed them, previous owner probably didn't lube them either.

I've had a clutch cable break on me twice on 2 different bikes. Was easy to get it home on the ninja 250 when it broke, just slide through the gears with no clutch, and dump it to 1st with a little revving to get going. The Buell Firebolt 12R, well that was.... interesting lol. A few wheelie moments going from a dead stop :).

Picked up my bike this morning (with a new clutch cable) and wow what a difference. I knew my clutch was getting stiffer, but I hadn't realised just how much.

I intend to keep this cable in a better condition than the last one .

Glad it was a simple fix.

Its a general maintainance thing and should be lubed at least once yearly, sooner if ridden in bad weather or when it tends to get stiffer. A little grease in the barrel end up at the lever helps with wear and tear too..

I usually use cable specific lube pressure sprayed into the cable.

I just tried some Honda chain lube with graphite on the cable. (I don't care for it on the chain as it tends to spray out on the wheel). So far, this product has worked very well, much better than the cable specific lube and seems to stick better to the innerds...

The cable has got about 12,000 miles on it, the mid ajuster is adjusted maybe halfways out....

Glad it ended up being something so simple
Turning thingie = clutch slave lever (at least in the States) :)
