I've seen a couple threads mentioning the mt-01 lately and have only herd of it never actually looked into it, so I figured I would, and let me say what a let down. With something that fugly you would expect it to be crazy, tire smoking fast, not to mention a 1600cc twin powering it. But seriously, 129mph top speed, under 90hp, 12sec 1/4 mile, why would Yamaha even waste their time. Our bikes have 1000cc less and should tear it a new one in any type of race. Even though I did call the bike fugly, don't get me wrong I like fugly looking bikes, things that are different and out there, but honestly if they make a bike that looks like that it better have the balls to back it up, and apparently it doesn't. I mean serious, 1600cc with only 88hp....

Oh Yamaha why do you do some of these things....

Of course thats just my 2cents

110ftlbs...

I'm sure it would be a fun bike but with a engine that big I would expect ALOT MORE

110 is killer. Changes the entire experience. You don't need more than 88hp on a twisty road when you've got 110 lbs of tire lofting torque.

What does it weigh?

I actually really like the looks of the MT-01. My last ride was a RoadStar 1600 (what the MT-01 was based on). The torque is what made it fun; where on our bikes the fun starts around 8k rpm, on my RoadStar it pulled hard right off of idle. It's a different kind of biking experience; not worse than our FZ's, just different. I turned mine into a cafe racer with lower, more forward bars, raised floorboards, raised & tightened rear suspension & all the performance mods a v-twin could handle. I was happy with the power, but never was with the cornering clearance, so enter the FZ-6. If they offered the MT-01 in the US, I might be riding it!

I read that it was based off the warrior 1700, which I guess is a different version of the roadstar, I guess I'm just a little surprised it doesn't make at least 125hp out of a engine that big, I mean most 1000cc vtwins in bikes like that make more power and weigh less, for example the sv1000 has about 115hp and weighs about 420lbs, that's a huge difference in weight for a bike. But the MT-01 is different and I like different, just a little disappointed I guess lol

I kinda liked it when I first saw it. With 36 more ft-lbs than the SV1000 it has a lot more power and yes, weighs about 100lbs more. Still, I bet it's a blast to ride and weighs about 100lbs more than an FZ6.

V-twins and I-4's are different animals. It's like comparing gas and diesel engined trucks. Yeah, they're both trucks but... this reaches it's torque peak at 3,750 rpm's! Like the brochure says:

The MT-01 is the bike that started the "Torque Sports" revolution.

Sports Torque is a unique kind of motorcycling experience, and the MT-01 is one of the finest examples of this breed. Torque Sports performance opens up a new world of sports riding because it offers an alternative to high RPM rush to today's in-line four cylinder supersport bikes. Grab a handful of throttle and discover the arm stretching torque that flows from the MT-01's massive V-Twin powerplant.

Maximum torque is unleashed at a mere 3,750 rpms. The MT-01's soul stirring torque is guaranteed to put a smile on your face while the agile sports chassis offers its rider all the exhilaration of a supersport machine. At Yamaha we recognize that as many sport riders mature, they often seek a slightly less extreme alternative. If you are ready to take the next step in sports riding, you owe it to yourself to check out the revolutionary 2009 MT-01.

Besides, if you like the Ducati Monster and similar machines then this is a less expensive alternative. I happen to think Ducati Monster's are some of the most sexiest bikes on the planet. This is similar to those but different... and a Yamaha that will last. But they don't sell it here in the States so we'll never know. I also love the Aprilia's... drool!

BTW, with a top speed of 129mph I think a large majority of people would be perfectly happy with that and never actually see it. My bike has been to 130mph once (according to GPS, 140 indicated) and it was pretty much topped out. That's my land speed record and will probably stand for the rest of my life.

I think CanadianFZ6 aka Richard has one of these, I would be interested to here what the real world riding experience is like?
I really the style of it. I have ridden Buell XB12 lightning but was really disappointed with the power, for me it was totally gutless. It is a limited editing bike with great features, Mag alloy wheels, Ohlins adjustable suspension etc.
Not enough to make me get one though.

Kind of like the Kawasaki B King in looks but that bike is ridiculously rip-your-arms-off fast and an I-4.

Oops, Suzuki B King.

Apparently you can drag a knee with it too-

One of my best buddies has an MT-01, or "Empty 1" as we call it.....due to it's limited tank range....15 litre tank, and it loves to drink!

These bikes are a torque machine, have the same brakes as an R1, and decent, chunky, fully adjustable suspenders, and in the right hands are a deceptively quick bike!

I call it a big mans bike...and my mate is about 150kg's in weight, and 6ft 4in tall!

You dont hear this bike coming up behind you, you feel it!

It shreds numberplates, cracking the plate around the bolt holes....just from the massive torque pulses the bike gives off..

You can get a Stage 1, Stage 2, or stage 3 hot up kit from Yamaha, with the Stage 3 kit costing about $10000....

And i thought the torque figure was more around 140!!!

Definitely an aquirrred taste....but one very individual bike...

By the way, my mate adores his MT-01!

In nm it's around 140 but in the states we use ft lbs

The more I look into it the more it's actually starting to grow on me. Obviously it's not going to be the fastest bike on the road but come to think about it, while on the road most people don't keep their bikes wound up to 10k all the time, and on a bike like the mt that red lines around 5.5 and has max tq around 3.5, it could very well be a blast in real world riding. It would probably get its ass handed to it on a track, but riding around town the mt would pretty much always be around its "sweet spot" and with just a twist you could probably leave most ss bikes in the dust, until they down shifted or went above 80-100mph.

Oh it just got better, I found a pretty cheep turbo kit for it, which brings it up to about 165hp and 230nm....

To bad ill never find out if I actually like it or not

Good video! He was keeping up on the corners with the other bikes even on a fat pig of a bike. It's about the rider...

Makes me wanna get one. It's different and that's what I like.

The MT is a bit like my TRX, the TRX has 4 less hp than my fizzer, and weigh's a bit more, but it has bucket loads more torque than the FZ6, and is a much quicker bike...due to the fact that it pulls so hard from so low down.

The power on hand is much more easily accesed than an inline four, with a peaky horsepower driven motor....and unlike a Yamaha inline four, on the big twin, it's all over by 8000rpm, whereas on the inline four's are just finding their feet!

The FZ6 still eats the MT-01 in the Twisties, but then my mate doesnt go that hard....he is a bit of a cruiser, and as such, the bike really suits his lazy riding style....pick a gear, any gear, and just twist the throttle, and the bike's massive torque will just pull you forward...

The only real problem the MT-01 has, is it is freaking heavy....that motor is massive! If the bike was 50kg's lighter, it would be a weapon!

And thanks for clearing up the torque question!

Yeah if it could loose between 50kg to 70kg, I bet someone would be hard pressed to find a 600 ss that could keep up with it on a track

The TRX has to be so fun to ride! The SV1000s is. Also the RC51, Super Dukes, Ducatis, Aprilias etc. Our motors are shorter stroke than the MT is and of course many of the twins that are out there are long stroke which gives them a big ass bottom torque but they lose the upper power band horse power very quickly. So there are engine designs that have that sweet spot for real world useable street and track combos. Shorter stroke, smaller multiple valves that reduce mass inertia of components help to make a motor that produces that torque early on in the power band and then extends that power band through the RPM range.
That MT-01 sounds like he's just cruizin down the bullyvard on that track LMAO!

Yeah, can't compare long stroke to a short stroke. That's like complaining about a shot of whiskey burning your throat and citing wine as a smoother alternative. The whiskey maker has heard if wine but decided to make some whiskey this time instead.

My 942 is a fast reving vtwin, makes more HP than torque, it's torquey, but not like the mt.

Basically they wrapped a cruiser engine in a standard chassis.
