I don't think it's a lube issue, I think it's a FZ6 clutch cable issue. I'm far from the only one to have to change it so early, if you search the board there are many others.

Regardless, the cable cost me I think $60 and fourty five minutes to put it in. Cheap enough for me not to bother to lube it

I got 73,000 on the original clutch cable on my old KLR, that's with lubing at regular intervals. Its easier for me to lube it rather than take the bike apart to change it out (raise tank, remove air box, disonnect inside frame holder, R&R cable, re-route cable. I can lube my cable in 6-8 minutes beginning to end... How he lubes the cable doesn't matter, just do it...

Its much cheaper and is just general maintainance, like cleaning/lubing your chain, changing oil/filter.. Do you have to lube your chain, its O-ring so why bother?

Performing regular maintainance/inspections will keep your bike running at its best and may find a problem developing.. Depending on your riding conditions, it'll will greatly affect wear and tear...

The original poster has a problem we're all trying to solve. Wether he wants to replace the cable or lube it, it should be checked and IMHO, serviced or replaced.

It is definitely the clutch link/cable. Today I went out on a long ride, and the problem simply does not exist when I change gears without the clutch. Also, riding slow (30mph) in 4th, then WOT---no slipping of the clutch, however even if I just slightly rest my hand on the clutch lever----slipping. So, I think it's the linkage, which is definitely the smaller evil!!!

As a start, I think I'm going to lube it. It will be raining here all week next week, so I'll probably get a chance to ride again in the weekend.

I bought a syringe from the pharmacy store, but trying to fill it up with some oil, I dropped it in the oil bottle, lol... anyway, decided to order this:

Glad you found it have you tried to adjust the free play at to see if that helps ive herd of others having to adjust it after changing the oil

Well, there is free play, yes. However, see this:

X-----------clutch----------Y-----free play-----Z

If I squeeze the clutch lever and then let go, the cable stays in position Y. If I push out on the lever, it goes to position Z. However, I don't think that position Y engages the clutch 100%, more like 90-95%, hence the slippage, until it gets to point Z.

Can somebody say what they think about that? (I just thought of this way to explain it, perhaps you'll understand what I mean).

Sounds like either the cable is binding somewhere or the return spring is getting or worn out

That's exactly what I'm thinking, the return spring!!! So, normally it should return all the way to the end (point Z), right?

Not necessarily, it really depends on how its adjusted mine doesn't go all the way eiher thats just how its suposed to be but it depends on how much its not returning in your case

It's actually a tiny bit, not too much, hmm...perhaps it's not that then.. (I'm making the observation by looking at the end of the cable where the return spring is next to the engine).

I'd doubt it's the cable. If you look at a clutch diagram, the shaft that connects to the cable at the clutch side, on the opposite end of the shaft has a pinion gear that is connected to a toothed pin in the pressure plate. So effectively the pressure plate pulls the cable out on it's own, hopefully that makes sense. The spring you see on the outside just takes up some freeplay. Look at this way, disconnect the clutch cable at the clutch side. Now push in the release shaft by hand instead of by the cable, you see how much force it takes to push it in? The cable would have to be seriously seized for it to cause the clutch to slip
