Raleigh NC?

I might be moving to NC from Oregon/Washington. Anyone here from the Raleigh/Durham area and give me some ideas on how riding is?

Don`t know about the Raleigh are but, you will be about 175 miles from some of the best riding and most beautiful scenery east of the Mississippi.
The BRP.
Ride over, get a motel room and spend a couple of days riding the BRP and the Cherohala Skyway.
Oh yea, I almost forgot the Dragon.

Plenty of nice riding around here, and good community of sportbike riders that organize rides pretty frequently. As mentioned, the motorcycling mecca of the east coast is a mere 4 hours away, but there's no shortage of nice winding roads around here as well.

Raleigh local here, riding is kinda tame around town but if you head out to the mountains it gets interesting.

This is correct. I am a sales/engineer and cover VA and NC. I have been all over both states to every major area. Raleigh is very populated but surprisingly the traffic has a lot of volume but doesn't back up that much, nothing compared to Virginia Beach, VA or Wilmington, NC.

And yes...you are only a few hours from the best riding in the East 50% of the country! The Smoky Mountains! :rockon:

There's some pretty country roads all around.... North of Raleigh in the Wake Forest, Youngsville area..... Northern Durham county as some nice country roads. South Orange County (Chapel Hill to Pittsboro area).

The Dragon is 4 or 5 hours away; however, 100 miles away is Smith Mountain Lake and a little beyond that is the Blue Ridge Parkway in VA.

welcome to the area - assuming you make it. everyone has pretty much given you a good idea of the roads around here. main thing to know is this part of the state is still somewhat flat and there aren't many twisty road. i personally like the area a lot. no far from the beach... not far from the mountains... plenty of people and things to do... but not overly congested. it's a pretty good area. oh, and we can ride pretty close to year-round.

So I'm here in NC helping out and getting a preview of the job to see if I actually want to apply for it. The weather is freakin' hot.... but there are bikes EVERYWHERE and I want to ride so badly. Is there anywhere bikes hang out during the evening?

You're coming over at the right time of year.... you'll have a whole winter to adjust to the summer. I've visited Raliegh/Durham to do some work with UL in Research Triangle Park. Lived a bit North of there at a hotel for a few weeks.

It doesn't take long to get out of town, and you are in farm country. Mostly straight roads, due to there not being any mountains to speak of. But the country does roll somewhat.

A lot of the people in Portland came from the Mid Atlantic area.. the culture is similar, but not identical to OR.

Congrats on the job, enjoy the countryside.
