Cooling fan trouble

A few days ago I have noticed that my 08 FZ6 has been overheating. I noticed that the cooling fan is not coming on. I checked the fuse and it was blown. I replaced the fuse and got the bike to around 210F and the fan never came on. I checked the fuse again and it was blown once again. Any ideas on what might be the cause??

Check to see if the fan can move freely. They've been known to get a pebble flipped up by the front tire and stuck between the fan and the radiator...

I didn't think to check the fan if it's moving freely before. I checked it now and there is something holding it. I appreciate your help, thanks.

After reading about the same problem on other bikes I was bored and ended up making a shield (aluminum) to protect the area, see below pic's:

A piece of duct tape, taped between the fan and radiator should perform as well..

I got the pebble out, the fan is spinning freely, and the fuse doesn't burn out anymore. However, the fan is still not kicking in when the temp reaches 220F. You guys have any ideas what to check next?

There's nothing left to check.... except for seeing if you can locate a working used fan. The design of the one Yamaha chose burns out when it can't spin, and is not repairable.

You can test the fan by unplugging it from the bike and running a hot and ground to the wires to the fan motor.

If its burnt out, it won't work (probably burnt out as stated above).


BTW, I bought an item from Skooter65, item was as described, quick delivery too...

Before buying the fan, or even taking it out to hot wire it. Check your relay at the front end of the bike.

My fan is dead, but I can't find the connector to replace it. The loom seems to lead through the frame to the area under the tank/airbox/battery. Do I have to dig that far down or is there a connector I'm missing somewhere?

Have you read the manual on how to replace the fan? I think the lead is real short like 4" from the motor. My bike isn't here to confirm this. But I thinks its real close.

All: Because this could happen to any of us, I did the following.
I took a Silver Sharpie marker and made a thumb sized silver line on the outside of the cooling fan. Now if I look down at it during a traffic stop, I can see its on and spinning. Also in less lit areas I can spin it and easily see its moving.

Its cheap insurance to be able to tell its spinning. Maybe one day I'll add an LED to the pod area to show me its on. . .

For another issue, I had to take my bike practically all the way apart (including the fan). I have an 06' so I dont know if its exactly the same, but it was a pain the arse to get to the connector that attaches to the cooling fan. The connector, for me atleast, was behind the battery and (if you are looking at it facing the front tire) to the left of the ignition coils. There are a couple connectors tucked up into the frame in that area and one of them was the one for the cooling fan. You'll probably have to be careful not to snag it on anything when taking it out because there are a couple other cables and the rubber/plastic heat shield in the way when sliding it through. If you try to go from under the bike, it should be located above and to the right of the AIS valve.

I have a 2008 Aussie FZ6S I got a stone caught in mine too it is currently in the shop waiting for a new fan to turn up. Sounds like it happens a lot.
