My bike has recently begun making a new sound. It may be showing its age . . .

When I pull in, there is a slight dip down and up the ramp into my driveway - a very conventional design. When I do the down and up into the driveway, I hear a 'kerthunk' from what seems to be the shock.

Any ideas? Could it be 'topping out'?

The bike is an '06 with around 34k miles. Prior to me buying it at 26k miles, it had a pretty tough life and slept outside.

Check the steering head bearing especially if it was an outside bike.

What is the preferred method? I am used to checking a bicycle headset by grabbing front brake and rocking the bike to check for play or noise.

Place bike on the centre stand & push/pull on both forks :thumbup: if you have nobody around to help support the bike be sure not to pull it off the centre stand

If its a downhill driveway , are you using any front brake ??? It may well be the floating front rotor , which is nothing to worry about :thumbup:

Have you ever had your steering head bearings replaced or repacked? It's a common occurance for most FZ6's. Most of us have replaced them with All Balls.

I had them performed by a shop, and at the same time they installed Race Tech Springs and swapped out to heavier fork oil as well.

+1 on head bearing! Mine did the same thing, but at a much 'younger' age. You'll be happy with the difference a set of roller bearings will make :thumbup:

Roller bearings are cheese & chalk compared to the crappy OEM ball bearings :thumbup: Makes a HUGE difference
