Hey Andz , while I have your attention i've been meaning to ask , What are these like ??

They look awesome but I cant find any real capability tests :don'tknow: I know they'll never compare to an Apache but a Eurocoter Tiger im guessing is the real comparison....

BAH!!!
They make the Apache look like a messy first draft. Really. I know they were designed here on the highveld, which is over a mile above sea level, which had the side effect of making them MUCH better at high altitude. They have a number of design improvements on the Apache, landing gear and some other bits and bobs. Don't know how they'd compare to Eurocopter, but definitely better then the Apache.

The ONLY weakness as it turns out was the use of US missiles, and based on that, certain deals fell through when the US declined to sell armaments to any country that bought the Rooivalk instead of the Apache. So the Roovalk never actually sold well.

They were the preferred vehicle in high altitude operations, places like Aganistan especially. Sea level they competed side by side with the Apache.

You can also look at the Oryx helicopter, which was Denel's upgrade of the french Puma helicopter. Very good designwork from back in the day. Ditto for the Cheetah fighter.

They are that good ?? AWESOME , if they are better then the Apache then they'll beat a Tiger no worries :rockon:

No denying that you lot over their can take good & make it better , agreed the Atlas Cheetah is bucket loads better than the standard Mirage :thumbup: The Atlas Impala was an improved Macchi & well you also have the AWESOME kick arse Gripen :D

The problem that we have now, is the staff and airforce command. After the "new south africa" all of the old white guys were forced out through "voluntary" retrenchment packages" in all the state departments.
The first few years pilots, found that they could get free training, but as soon as they qualified, they got better packages from SAA, the commercial carrier. So the Air force kept hiring and training, but couldn't keep these guys.
We're now in a position where yes we HAVE Grippens, but we only have 5 guys in the country that can fly them.

Like the rest of this country, what was a world class military is now just a bunch of ragtag idiots with no discipline and even less ability :(

(like the something billion rand submarine that some idiot plugged into the wrong power supply while in dock. Brand new sub with not a single working electronic component on board)

Sounds similar to the problems we have with our Air force at the moment , when we retired the F-111 90% of the staff went with the old girl :eek: simply because the Super Hornet is not half of a replacement for the 111

We bought a whole bunch of ex US navy Sea Sprite helo's & they arent compatible with our systems so we GAVE them to the NZ navy ;)

Bouth a whole bunch of M1 Abrams tanks off the US , found out when they got here that we have no way of moving them around :shakehead:..... So of to Boeing to buy 4 C-17's , thanks for coming :D

Retired the DHC-4 Caribou , left us with nothing to do our short short short field work that we carry out in PNG , also took away our LAPES capability which was desperately needed during our recent flood disaster :( Again , the Govt assumed that a King Air could do the same job , yeah right :spank:

I could go on & on & on but that would just bore you :D
