My son Joshua (15)

Josh started to play football at the age of 4. He joined a local club and trained twice a week + back garden training with dad. He was obsessed.
Now I am not a soccer fan or have I ever played it to any level.

By age 5 he was playing in a junior league and only getting 5-10 minutes on the pitch as he was not deemed good enough. To small, lacks aggression, not fast enough.

Josh spent every waking moment kicking a ball and continued to train despite not getting much match time.
This carried on up until he was 9, with subsequent managers not having faith in him. I would stay awake after a night shift to take him to matches and tournaments. Knowing full well that our journey to the match would be longer than the time he spent on the pitch.
He just loved playing.

When Josh was 13 the club he had played for since the age of 4 imploded amongst parental politics.
Josh moved to another club of his choice and carried on. By this time he had two great feet. Excellent balance and pretty good tactical awareness. At last he found a manager that saw something in his ability.
During this time he really came on and his skill and confidence increased.

3 months ago Josh attended a training workshop to look at other avenues within the game. By chance he was asked to attend a training session at Reading FC.

Josh got accepted into the Academy trial programme to compete for a place at their full time training academy.
Over the three months Josh underwent assessments and matches.

Today I got a phone call to tell me. "Dad guess what"?
I got in Reading | Team | Academy | Academy Squad | Academy Of Football Studies

I am the proudest dad ever, He has achieved this through his own self determination and perseverance.

That's bloody great Nelly! Your chest must be well puffed about now! Nice one....

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Congrats to you and especially your son, for working hard and not giving up. You have all the reasons in the world to be proud of him, for him to stick with it despite all the negatives driven toward him says a lot about him and you. Stick your chest out proudly!:thumbup:

Awesome!! Cool when kids get into sports because they love it and not because their parents push them into it.

We completely understand. That is awesome! This is only just the beginning...the best parts are coming up yet.

(by the way you made a clerical error in your post....it is a "field" not a "pitch". But it's okay I'll let this one slide due to the exuberance of your post)

[difficulty in typing, due to puffed out chest causing belly to push keyboard away from short arms]

Cheers fellas,

Thanks for the acknowledgement, I can't wait to tell him that there are other people stoked for him.

[ deep breath again, chest puffed out as required. Keyboard now out of reacccccccccch]

Congratulations !!!! :cheer::cheer:

I'm not a dad myself, but I have my old man still feeling proud of me for small things (and I am almost 30 now), now with that big achievement of your son I can completely imagine how you feel ... watch out that heart :D

I wish your son all the best in his career :thumbup:

offtopic: I really like British people, you call the sport in the PROPER way ... FOOTBALL

I won't be able ever to understand why other fellas call football that armored sport :BLAA:

Cheers

That's so great Nelly! You see so many great people that develop from the heart. When so many things stop a person from their dream and the heart sees them through! This is more than just being great at something. You get to see a part of being human that goes beyond what we see with the naked eye.
You should be proud and have no buttons left on your shirts!! :rockon:

you must be so chuffed, I'm really proud for you and your son Nelly :rockon:

I especially love hearing this as I know a lot of parents who push their kids into sport, and it generally backfires at some stage.

I wish your son all the best in the sport of his choice :thumbup:

Congrats m8 .I know where you are coming from when you say "i'm not a football fan". Me niether just back garden.:thumbup:

Well done! Joshua must be on cloud nine....to set a goal & acheive it :thumbup:

And congrats to you & and Josh's mum too! :D
