My previously flawless 04, after about 10 miles, goes from great to can't idle below about 5000 rpms. Any ideas?

There was a recall on the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on bikes from our years. Do you know if that's been replaced?

How many miles, and what's the maintenance history?

When you say "can't idle" what are you seeing exactly?

If experience ECU's bumping up the RPM with a vacuum leak. Look for a loose boot between a throttle body or other possible hose leak..

+1 on the above. A missing plastic plug for doing a throttle sync would do the same but all the time, not just after 10 miles...

The TPS needs to be checked and replaced if necessary but it shouldn't cause the problems you describe.

Crack the gas cap open as well and crank it up to make sure you don't have a vacuum lock (gas tank not venting).

Was any service/accessories done recently?

I'm going to assume you start off with the engine cold, and it takes around 10 minutes for the bike to warm up.... how long have you had the bike, and what is the outside temp range you've ridden it through?

At that point, the ECU mapping changes when the motor gets warmed up to operating temp. Prior, it's running on an open loop, 'rich' map.

What mods have been done to the bike?
