K&P SS re-usable oil filter

i wouldnt use a reusable filter personaly. for 120 bucks how many genuine filters can u buy in the US?
i realy dont think they filter aswell as a normal filter and for the price diffferance i would much rather use and trust a normal throw away filter.

To what micron level does it filter to? Oil flow rates and reusability are great but if it doesn't trap the dirt as well as a standard filter then I don't understand the benefit of reusability.

Looks very cool however.

Some of what their FAQ says is interesting, but some of it is dodgy. They don't make any mention of efficiency numbers, and their claim about use in aerospace is only half true. I don't know of any oil application for steel mesh filters, save for hydraulic. I didn't see any mention of SAE test numbers either. These filters and their claims have always been too good to be true, and I don't see that this one is any different.

Under the FAQ section from Custom Oil Filters - Reusable Oil Filters - Cleanable Oil Filters - Green Oil Filters :

4) How does this type of filtration compare to paper oil filters?

We use ASTMF316 testing procedures which eliminate many of the user variables found in the SAE procedures. Basically, the filter media is pressurized from one side, and when the media starts passing particles, that is the micron rating. We sent filter media from several common brands of paper filters to the lab to be run through the ASTM test. We sent the media to the lab with no names, just numbers for identification so they wouldn't have any idea what brand filter they were testing. The results for the paper filters ranged from 48 microns for the best filter to over 300 microns for the worst filter. Our tests were right in line with other testing results we have researched that have paper media filters passing particles anywhere between 50 and 90 microns. What does this mean? Paper filters are rated on averages, percentages of efficiency (also known as beta ratios) and multiple passes, so a 10 micron rated paper filter (as advertised on the packaging) may be letting particles 50 microns and larger through. The medical grade stainless steel cloth that we use is consistent across the entire media surface and is rated at 35 microns, meaning nothing larger than 35 microns should pass through the material. The bottom line is we meet or exceed the filtration performance of OEM filters, eliminating any warranty issues.

That is the same FAQ I read, and it still does not answer enough questions.

Reusable things are a great idea, mostly because they pay for themselves in applications where there is frequent maintenance required. This company is not the only one to sell a filter like this with "medical" grade mesh in it. It seems that most of their advertising is based on snazzy terms. Just because it is good for blood, doesn't mean I want it filtering my oil. They make some claims about the SAE tests, but as far as I know, they have been amended to make them more accurate.

Of course a filter with less surface area and pleats is not going to filter as well as one with more. I don't think anyone could rationally make that claim.

I use one on my 04 FZ6 and and on my XR 650. I like the extra added security of having the best possible filter. Filter technology is not rocket science . This product has not been around as long as the paper filters so of course its going to be hard to find independent studies regarding performance.
Scotts is company I can get behind and I know they have done extensive off road testing in extreme racing conditions on these types of filters. If they use them in that application with good results than I should be fine for my 5000 mile oil change intervals. Good stuff.

120 bucks for a reusable filter doesn't work in my city. I can buy 36 pieces of regular paper filter with 120 bucks. I am not sure I will still own this bike until then. Regardless, the reusable K$N air filter is a better investment as I cannot get any regular one in my city.

but the fz6 uses the filter:5gh-13440-20
and the fjr use the filter:5jw-13440-00
now i know that there are 2 5gh filters and the only difference is the length but the 5JW is different internally to the 5GH like release preasure and stuff, look the same but different

Very impressive! I also ran into this little video which was informative as to performance and maintenance. Inside Drag Racing - Dave Fisher

Scott,
Thanks for the application chart. On the home page they list a small group that didn't include my SV1000s but the app chart showed it.
It is pricey but anything that will improve oil cooling is a winner. I think most MC engines are running minimal cooling designs to begin with. I ride a lot in hot areas for a good part of the year. The hardest duty my bike does is in traffic. Through the miracles of modern science, civilization and hominids with drivers licenses, it takes me sometimes 20 minutes to travel 3.5 miles from the freeway to my home.

I forgot about this filter......I came across this in '06 while statoned in San Diego. I almost bought it for my truck but due to the price, I passed. Times are a differnt' now.....The hobby shop on base swore up and down about these....in a goood way!
