Driving into work yesterday, changed into second when bang, huge pain up the back of my left leg.I didn't think much of it even though it hurt like hell.I carried on but got sent to A+E by my boss. After an x-ray and scan it turned out I'd torn my Achilles Tendon 40% across where it joins the ankle bone.

They don't want to operate at the moment because that area is known for infection,so I'm plastered from my toes to my knee and off work for 8 weeks.

The next time I'll be riding,it'll be winter again......:( :( :(

What a bummer! that sucks the big one! :(

I once spent 4 weeks in hospital with a pinched Sciatic nerve in my back, and all i did, was twist a little, whilst mopping a floor...it dont take much for these awful things to happen... :(

Heal quck fella, and bummer about missing out on some of your riding "season"!

Chin up...

That sux mate. We're scrounging out dry roads whenever we can find them now, so can instantly relate to missing out on good riding days.

I hope it's not too painful. I guess we all kinda forgot about that in the horror of missing out on riding. Sounds pretty painful though.:(

Jeez, how heavy is your clutch?

Nah, joking.

That's terrible for you. I hope you can relax at home and repair quickly.

Keep us informed how you go :(

Cheers Guys

Worst thing is,I'm not allowed to weight bear at all,so I can't even fiddle about with the bike when I'm off.All I can do is sit here feeling bloody useless.
I can't stand taking so much as a day off work,so 2 months is going to feel like a lifetime :(

Can't believe just doing something like changing gear can screw up your life so bad......

Sorry to hear your injured, Ridgeback. Sounds like a freak injury. How strange, eh?
Ask Valentino Rossi to send you his magical healing powers and who knows, you may be up and runnin in 6weeks!
Get well soon, mate.

Wow. The achilles tendon is one of the strongest tendons in the body. To tear it, even partially would have taken a significant amount of force. I agree though, the area is pretty superficial, and close to bone as well. Lots of chance for infection there. At least it is only a partial tear, a full tear would have caused the tendon remains to retract up in between the two muscles making up your calf. That WOULD have required surgery, and a distinctly longer convalescent period.

Glad that ultimately your ok, and even though you can't weight-bear (or ride), at least you have lots of time to surf for new mods! :D

Good luck!

Get well soon and don't try to rush the healing process!

I know the feeling about sitting out most of the riding season due to an injury. On May 24 this year, my right hand was injured in an accident where glass severed 3 tendons, 2 nerves, a muscle and a digital artery.

It took 2.5 hours of surgery and I'm still off work for a couple more weeks. Tendon repairs take a long time to heal, and any progress can be easily reversed by over using the repaired tendon.

Sorry to hear your injured,

Personally if it was me (and I had a choice) I would go for the repair. Although the time to heal is there or there about's as conservative treatment. It is much less of a pain in terms of having serial casts applied. IMHO and from working in an Orthopaedic OP plaster room. The patients who opt for the repair tend to require less physiotherapy, they get mobile again much quicker and have fewer complications.
If your worried about infection rates, you can ask the hospital which you attend what there rates are.
Good luck

Nelly

Sorry to hear you're hurt.:( You'll be back before you know it! I've pulled muscle doing simple tasks and can't imagine tearing that tendon. Get well soon!

If it was down to me I'd have gone for the surgery,It was the SAU team that made the decision.
I've worked at the Royal Surrey Hospital for years before I moved into the private sector and they really are brilliant

As before thanks to you and everyone for their kind wishes

Daz.
