The children at Rossi College sat a biology test. The class held under 30 students. 1/3 scored a B; 1/4 scored a -B; 1/6 scored a C; 1/8 failed. The rest of the children got A's. How many children got A's?

I still argue that depending on your definitions of 1/4 and 1/8 of 30 (since they are uneven numbers) it could be 3-5 people.

That would only work if you allowed 1/2 people. The question could have been a bit clearer if it had stated.

"The class held under 30 students. Exactly 1/3 scored a B; 1/4 scored a -B; 1/6 scored a C; 1/8 failed. The rest of the children got A's. How many children got A's?"

But the clue was 'under 30 students'. The fractions indicated that the number had to be divisible by 3 and 4 and the fact that they are human suggests that partial numbers / fractions of humans would not be acceptable. You can't have 7.5 students getting a "B" as you have a finite number of students.

This leaves you with 24 students. 3 of which (or 1/8) received A's.

1/3 = 8 students got B's
1/4 = 6 students got B-'s
1/6 = 4 students got C's
1/8 = 3 students Failed

You need the common denomonator - less than 30. 3 4 6 8 are the the CD's. 24 is the only number under 30 that has all of these CD's in them.
