ConvertiBar Plan

Wouldnt that require a whole new replacement of the tire/rim, brakes , and etc. from the R6 as well?

It depends on the year of your FZ. 04 to 06 yes, 07 and 08 no. The 07 and up brakes will fit (same as R6), the wheel assembly will work however you need a shim kit so the wheel spacing and brake spacing is correct. The R6 is 5mm wider.

For more info check out the stickys over at SBN in the FZ6 Mod section

Nope. Wheels, tires, brakes, rotors, sprockets are compatible. See my Compatibility Chart. R6 Axle is longer, fender mount points vary their distance off by the FZ6 Model Year (04-06 FZ6 vs. 03-04 R6/06-08 R6S, 07-08 FZ6 vs. 03-04 R6/06-08 R6S) but the FAZR6 R6 Fork Mod Spacer Kit fixes that in the FZ6 Triple. Using the R6 triple tree means I can do away with the Spacer Kit. I only have questions about the steering stem (that part that actually fits through the frame head) and steering stops. But it's one of those things you just have to try.

Good points Doc. With the stock bar it did feel like a cruiser to me! Ha! Ha! The LSL bar has helped a great deal.

You are right, it is a lot of work, and some days I wonder why I didn't buy and R6 and just install risers for the clip ons. Then I look at the seat and no one would want to ride with me more than a block with an R6 seat.

For ME the FZ6 would be prefect if is was just a bit more sporty and with a better suspension. Like VFR quality, but and FZ.

A lot of the mods I've done I would have done on any bike, brake lines, windscreen, fork springs (most are too soft), Pazzos, and probably an exhaust.

I just wish our suspension was adjustable.

So back on topic, it the machined top clamp works out that will be the simplest solution.

I agree w/Hellgate 100% on everything here. GF stopped sitting on back when I got my 07 R6S. She loved the grab rails of the FZ6. Adjustable rear suspension would have kept me from buying an R6S and I would have gone straight to an R1.

But with my bike being completely naked, is the steering stop a concern since I have no fairings to worry about hitting? If thats the case, I am just gonna swap the whole front end.

Next, you have to worry about hitting the gas tank.

I unfortunately have aftermarket steering stops form Aztec8. Its those huge plastic fork clamps for my 5 3/4" headlights. The clamps hit the front of the frame and not the gas tank. We will see.

I am in the process of doing the same to my naked FZ, have ordered custom made clipons and have a second fz top triple clamp,i am planning on cutting off the bar risers.

I have been in touch with yamaha and this was their reply:

Dear Simon,

We do not recommend grinding the handle bar riser from the steering clamp
as it may affect the strength of the triple clamp. The clamping of the
original handle bar could also assist in adding strength and rigidity to
the triple top clamp.

We feel that it would be best to find an alternative after market top
triple clamp to match the clip-on handlebars.

I reckon its mainly ass covering from yamaha..

My brother works for an oil company, he had a couple of the mechanical engineers there to look at it and they reckon it shouldn't weaken the structure too much, but, because it is a cast unit, it may have a problem with a stress fracture forming where you cut it. He said its important to round off the edges of the cut, this will apparently reduce the chance of a fracture.

Im going to get it done at a pro shop, know they'd do a better job of it than me with my angle grinder :)

Simon, that was my original plan, cut them off with a hack saw and then clean it up with a grinder. I ordered one off of Flea Bay, ended up being bent, but I wasn't aware of the clamp stalks being hollow. So that ended that project. Let us know how it turns out.

bummer about the triple clamp off fleabay being bent.. lucky mine was sweet.. but got it off a wrecker...

After going to bike shops and engineering shops no one would cut them off for me with proper machining equipment due to fear of being sued should something go wrong down the track with the clamp... Shame the society we live in, the old guys at both places said it should be fine, and 20 years ago they woulda cut them off for me nice and clean no probs, but these days just couldnt risk it...

So i cut em off wit a hack saw.. probably more satisfying anyway :)

cleaned it up and smoothed off the edges with a dremel.. has come up very nice.. tried to install it on the weekend and found that under the original clamp the iginition bit is bolted in with something that has no screw or bolt end to undo it.. frustrating... so i'll be taking it into a bike shop for installation of my clipons and "new" triple clamp this week.. check out my bike at 2004 YAMAHA FZ6N - BikePoint

i'll be updating the pics on this site when its all done..

Another route to go down: Honda Blackbird clip-ons will fit and don't hit the fairing or tank when you get them in the right place. Not done it myself, but have read on another forum where a guy did it and he had no problems.

Could be a cheaper experiment than buying new helibars etc. if you can find the parts on flea-bay.

Hellgate did you ever get anywhere with your R6 top clamp or did you decide to leave the "big ole' honkin' empty clamp" looking at you?

The R6 top clamp will not fit as the leg spacing is a little wider than the FZ.

The Acculign clamp is great and works perfectly.

BTW, the Convertis and the Top Clamp are for sale. $500 for both.

Sorry I didn't see your post sooner.

I'm looking at adding clip-ons but don't want to be left with the two handle bar stubbies sticking up stairing at me. I had planned on gridding them down like Bertmogg did but then saw this thread. I'd rather replace the clamp than grind it down which is why I'm so curious if this worked out for you. Your thoughts?

Oh this worked out great. It is much, much stonger than the stock clamp to begin with, looks better, (IMHO) and is the only one in the world.

I'm actually torn on selling it. It is really a beautiful piece of machining, there are NO errors on it at all.

Interestingly people in the know will ask me if it is an Acculign piece. Their work is simply one of the best period.
