I can buy an 8" meatball sub for $ 5.99 at my local take-away. They say they have a special on the 14" meatball sub, which is $ 16.51. What percentage discount is the take-away shop offering?

The small meatball sub has a diameter of 8" and therefore an area proportional to 8 squared . The large sub has a diameter of 14" and therefore an area proportional to 14 squared. If the subs are priced in accordance with their areas, then Price of large sub / Price of small sub = (14 / 8)2 = 3.06 or Price of large sub = 3.06 × 5.99 = 18.34. Thus, Discount on large sub = [1 − (16.51 / 18.34)] × 100 = 10 %.

THERE WERE NO WINNERS TODAY :(

I actually don't get this one guys - I think this QOTD was an EPIC FAIL....... :Flip:

This would have made more sense (to me, at least) if it was pizzas instead of meatball subs. Around here, subs are not round. An 8" pizza for $5.99 is $0.1192 per square inch. A 14" pizza for $16.51 is $0.1073 per square inch, which is 10% less than $0.119 (0.1073 = 0.9 x 0.1192)

Yep, that's why it was an EPIC FAIL..... :shakehead:

I try to change things up so people can't google and cheat - this one backfired in a big way :rof:

Ahh, I get it now. I guess the original, google-able version was pizza. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another round food that would work well.

You could have done an 8" meatball vs a 14" meatball, and calculating the percentage would have been tricky because volume is a function of the cube of the radius. That's what I thought the question was until I saw the sandwich part.
