Oil change

i went in to get some oil and a filter from the dealer today, i asked about synthetic and i was told that Yamaha recommends regular oil.

I am surprised that synthetic isn't recommended ?

Any truth to this and if not what is a quality synthetic that you guys have used ?

Yamaha probably recommends regular oil because they only sell regular oil. I've used Mobil-1 synthetic for 22,000 (minus 400 breakin) miles and no problems so far!

Yeah.. most dealers will recommend what they sell.
The only thing you have to look for on any given oil (besides proper viscosity), to make sure it's safe to run in your bike is one of these designations: JASO MA or JASO MA2. Those designations mean the oil is safe to use with wet clutch systems.

Hey, just because Shell Rotella T6 is used by a lot of folks on this forum for FZ6s, R6s, FZ1s, etc., it doesn't mean it's right for Hobbesca's bike. He should follow the dealers recommendation and buy oil only from them. In fact, he should avoid changing his own oil because it is bad for the environment and the economy, ...

Seriously, a bunch of us use Shell Rotella T6 and it seems to work well and is relatively inexpensive. I've personally used Shell Rotella in my FZ6, Vstar 1300, and R6. I have one more jug in the garage ready for the next oil change.

I ended up getting regular oil but the next oil change I go with the Shell synthetic. Now if it would only quit raining i could get back out and ride.

FWIW, I use Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil.
I think it's great. My shifter sometimes would get stuck, but now that doesn't happen anymore.
I assume the transmission is better lubricated.
But really, using any synthetic oil is pampering your bike enough.

For my oil filter, I use mobile one m1-110.
It's slightly larger than the oem one, and it filters a lot better.
Don't buy a FRAM filter. They suck.

I've used Yamalube,Shell,Lucas and Amsoil. I have 27k on a 06 Fz6 that I got in 07. For me Amsoil is the best. It runs cooler and shifts smoother.

thanks Erci....I did read the manual but somehow the MA-MA2 info did not
register in my bean, bought a good quality Pennzoil 10W30 with proper API
spec, gonna drain it later today and get some clutch friendlier stuff in there

That's the oil I would be using, if it wasn't so very very expensive. I've been using Mobil1 in my cars for many years.

Okay, I've heard the Shell Rotella (now JASO approved) arguments. But, you know that if you drop the "S" from "Shell" what that ends up spelling? Now, why would anybody want to use a motor oil, that if you dropped the first letter, spells "Hell"? Think it about it, people!

For my first oil change on my '06 I went for the Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil. Seemed like a logical choice since I too have been using Mobil 1 in my cages for decades.

I really don't have a means for comparison since I think the bike shifts smooth and otherwise performs like it should (flawlessly). I never think to myself, gee this bike is running great on this expensive oil.. it's kinda just assumed it will perform well so I don't think about it.

Now with that said, the next oil change I will try the Rottella T6 synthetic. I really want to see if that stuff is just as good.

Ultimately the oil you put in your bike is the stuff that will give you confidence as you put the bike thru it's paces. One thing for sure there are better oils out there than what Yamaha is recommending.
