Dead horn?

Anyone ever have trouble with a dead stock horn? Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sounds like a loose wire to me but before I go taking things apart, maybe one of you have dealt with this already and tell me the magic fix.

Those stock horns are terrible anyway - sounds like time for an upgrade.

The wiring is really very simple. There are 2 wires that connect to the horn. You would need to hook up a volt meter and press the horn button to make sure you are getting juice through the wires. If you are getting juice, the horn itself is bad. An oem replacement can be found really cheap if you look on ebay but for a little more you can have a real horn. It makes a huge difference

Is the signal from the handlebar switch good? You could start by taking the horn off and running a jumper from your car battery or bike battery to the the horn connectors to see if it fails. Wear ear plugs!

Here are some things to check from the service manual.
Most simple horns have a contact adjustment that sometimes needs to be adjusted and can cause intermittent problems.


HORN DOES NOT SOUND

Improperly adjusted horn

Damaged or faulty horn

Faulty main switch

Faulty horn switch

Faulty battery

Blown, damaged or incorrect fuse

Faulty wire harness

i had a problem with the horn did the following:

there is a little screw on the horn (i think its not the one that holds it to the bracket) i turned it a couple of turns anti-clockwise (unscrew) and then a small amount of air released (heared a little pffff like a baby fart ) and then a small amount of liquid like silicone. wiped, screwed it again back and horn works fine for 3 years now.

for some reason it builds pressure inside combined with oil and moisture. that makes it not to work.

This is why I love you guys and this forum. I went out to the bike, took out that little gold adjuster screw, put it back in, and just like that - brand new horn.

And P.S. No greasy goo or liquid came out, but that screw was clearly the problem/solution.
