Problems changing down gears

Hello. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I have a 2005 FZ6 Fazer. When the bike is hot it is almost impossible to change down to a lower gear. This problem usually happens when the wife and I are on the bike. Can anyone give me any ideas?

Are you talking about downshifting while decelerating or downshifting once stopped?

Check what you can with relation to the clutch and your chain if that does not prove beneficial then you may just need to take it to dealer. Good luck! :thumbup:

Both. Usually sticks in 5th & 6th.

I remember having this problem going from 2nd to first.
After switching to synthetic oil (Mobile One for motorcycles), I've never had this problem.
Could be a case of confirmation bias, but I think the clutch is better lubricated or something.....

EDIT: also, check to see if your chain slack is in spec.

The chain slack is fine but neither the wife or myself are exactly light weights, so when we are both on the bike it may be a bit tight. I will try slackening it a little and see if that works. Thanks for your advice.

It will usually happen if the chain is too loose, not too tight. So maybe you should be trying a fully synthetic. It's a strange thing though, I hope there isn't something more serious going on in the gearbox.....

If I try to down shift from 5th to 1st while stopped, it'll usually hang up. If you just barely let the clutch out till it grabs you'll be able to down shift the rest of the way. So I don't do that anymore. Just down shift as you slow down...and remember you have to let your foot all the way off the lever after you click it down or it'll hang up too. (had that happen a couple of times untill I lowered the shifter

maybe you should check your oil,it usually happen to me when my oil need to be changed after 5000km ++,but for upshifting from gear 1 to 2

Check your oil.

Chain overtight with pillion is asking for trouble. you'll bend stuff

Tighten your clutch cable. Set it too, if it's not engaging properly you'll get what you're getting.

Another possibility that is often overlooked, is whether you have lubricated your shifting linkage. Spray either white lithum grease or some other lube on the pivoting points between the shifter and the transmission input shaft. Make sure to wet the rubber seal in the transmission case, too.

When the pivots start to dry out, they get sticky, and the shifter will be reluctant to drop back into the center of it's range after you shift. If it doesn't return to the center with ease, it's not set up for the next shift.... the internal gating mechansim will not allow it to shift more than one gear at a time.......

Possibly, with your wife on the back you shift more gently than you do when you ride by yourself?

I have this happening to me when trying to downshift too fast, although it hasn't happened as often as it used to. Most times, if I am at a stop, I play a bit with the friction zone, just let whatever gear engage a little, after which I downshift again. It does the job all the time.
